Connor Hellebuyck has finally removed any uncertainty about what he wants from the Winnipeg Jets, and that could immediately bring the Carolina Hurricanes back into one of the NHL offseason’s biggest trade stories.
Hellebuyck publicly confirmed Thursday that he privately requested a trade several months ago, saying that with training camp approaching, he believed it was time to make his position clear. That changes the leverage surrounding Winnipeg considerably. This is no longer speculation about whether the three-time Vezina Trophy winner might be available. Hellebuyck wants a move, and the Jets now have to determine which contender can produce an acceptable return.
That is where Carolina becomes fascinating.
The Hurricanes reportedly made a serious push earlier this summer. NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported in June that Carolina’s offer was believed to include restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin and a first-round pick. No deal was completed, but Hellebuyck’s public trade request gives Carolina a very good reason to pick up the phone again.

The biggest reason I keep coming back to Carolina is that this isn’t a team trying to build toward contention. The Hurricanes are defending Stanley Cup champions with a roster capable of winning again immediately.
Adding Hellebuyck would be the kind of move a contender makes when it sees a chance to create a significant advantage at the most important position on the ice.
Carolina also has something most potential Hellebuyck destinations don’t have: actual salary-cap flexibility.
PuckPedia currently projects the Hurricanes with approximately $9.88 million in cap space against the $104 million ceiling. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31. On the simplest possible calculation, Carolina could absorb his entire contract and still have approximately $1.38 million remaining without Winnipeg retaining a dollar.

There is another important variable: Hellebuyck possesses a full no-movement clause for 2026-27. Winnipeg can’t simply choose the highest bidder. Hellebuyck must approve the destination, although Sportsnet’s current examination of potential landing spots specifically identifies Carolina and notes the potential appeal of reuniting him with Team USA defenseman Jaccob Slavin.
What a Hurricanes-Jets Hellebuyck Trade Could Look Like
The question isn’t whether Carolina has enough assets. It does.
The bigger question is how much more Winnipeg can realistically demand now that Hellebuyck has made his desire to leave public.
Hellebuyck’s resume is exceptional. He won the Hart and Vezina in 2024-25 after posting a .925 save percentage and 2.00 goals-against average, but last season dropped to a .895 save percentage and 2.86 GAA in 57 games. PuckPedia still credited him with a positive 5.54 goals saved above expected, illustrating why evaluating his decline solely through traditional save percentage would be a mistake. His career .916 save percentage over 625 games still carries enormous weight.
That combination of elite pedigree, recent volatility, age, contract term and a public trade request creates one of the most difficult trade valuations in hockey.

My read is that Carolina shouldn’t dramatically increase its earlier offer simply because Hellebuyck has now gone public. If anything, the pressure has shifted toward Winnipeg.
The Jets can wait, but the closer this gets to training camp, the harder it becomes to pretend the situation won’t affect the room. Winnipeg already added Stuart Skinner on a two-year deal carrying a $3.75 million cap hit, giving the organization at least some protection if Hellebuyck is eventually moved.
For Carolina, the gamble comes down to whether management believes last season’s .895 save percentage represented the beginning of Hellebuyck’s decline or simply a down season from one of the best goaltenders of his generation.
I would bet much more heavily on the latter.
Put Hellebuyck behind Carolina’s structure, give him another legitimate Stanley Cup window and reunite him with players such as Slavin, and the Hurricanes could potentially turn an already championship-level roster into an even more difficult playoff matchup.
That’s why the Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors surrounding the Winnipeg Jets and Carolina Hurricanes deserve renewed attention. Carolina tried before. Winnipeg wasn’t ready to make the deal. Hellebuyck has now made his position unmistakably public.
The circumstances have changed.
And that may be exactly what the Hurricanes were waiting for.
