As the hours tick on, it is looking like current GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kyle Dubas, may not be the GM of the NHL’s biggest fan base.
The Maple Leafs need to make a decision soon on a GM with the 2023 NHL draft coming up. Decisions have to be made on Auston Matthews and William Nylander. Will both be extended this summer, will the core four be broken up? Will the team re-sign Ryan O’Reilly? The Leafs have a lot of discussions ahead of them in the next month.

Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 and was asked the question about Toronto’s GM situation. He believes the Leafs want to keep Kyle Dubas as GM, but if the workload is too much and he wants time to spend with family, he will not be back and a decision will be made either today or this weekend.
Dreger went on to say in his radio hit, that if Dubas is not back, they will NOT hire internally. Assistant GM Brandon Pridham is the logical choice, but they will look for a GM with experience. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in win now mode and they need a GM that can come in and do what is needed for them to be a Stanley Cup contender.
Dreger believes former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving would be the perfect choice for the Leafs if Dubas decides not to come back.

Dubas is not the problem, hes given the Leafs every opportunity and put stars on that team. Its coaching or certain players that aren’t getting it.
Why does he think this is his choice to make? He built this top heavy team, that can’t get it done. He is gone.

Shanny better get it right when he selects his next GM, due to if this doesn’t workout he won’t get another chance, he’ll be shown the door with that GM if it doesn’t work. But right now I’m waiting to see if there’s any fallout from Kyle’s departure other than Speeza resignation. Pridham and Wes (head of scouting) are good friends do they end up leaving if Kyle signs elsewhere. The timing of all of this couldn’t be worse. Matthews and Nylander, deal’s, the draft, free agency, not ideal. In no way does Sheldon escape the wrath of change, I believe he’s gone. Nylander and Marner must be wondering if they’ll be on the move. It seems that Leaf’s player’s only win the Stanley Cup after they leave the Leaf’s

Not that Dubas was a great GM but going from him to Trelving would be a big downgrade.
