In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 960 radio, NHL analyst Frank Seravalli delved into the situation of Washington Capitals forward Anthony Mantha. Seravalli stated that a change of scenery might be the remedy for Mantha, whose transition to the Capitals has yet to yield the expected results.
Mantha, acquired by the Capitals at the 2021 NHL trade deadline in a significant trade with the Detroit Red Wings that involved a first-round pick, a second-round pick, Jakob Vrana, and Richard Panik, was seen as a potential game-changer for Washington. However, his performance has fallen short of expectations.
Will the Washington Capitals trade Anthony Mantha?
Seravalli noted that Mantha, with his imposing physical presence and scoring potential, has the tools to be a game-changing player. Yet, the Capitals haven’t witnessed the consistent effort and impact they had hoped for.
As Seravalli pointed out, the challenge is that Mantha’s contract and the limited salary cap space across the league could make a potential trade difficult. Nonetheless, the notion that a player of Mantha’s caliber might benefit from a change of scenery is a topic that will surely pique the interest of Washington Capitals fans.
Mantha, 29, has one year left on his current contract, with an average annual value of $5.7 million.
Such a shame. I remember Mantha dominating the Word Junior tournament. Injuries have hurt his career. But maybe a change of scenery and one last shot on another team can turn the career around?
Caps will definitely have to eat some of his salary if a trade is to happen.
