The Calgary Flames‘ Rasmus Andersson received a four-game suspension following a massive but dirty hit on Columbus Blue Jackets forward Patrick Laine. The hit, which occurred in the closing seconds of the Flames’ 3-1 loss, raised concerns about player safety, and the fact that Andersson left his feet on the hit was a factor in the suspension.
In a video explanation of the suspension, the NHL cited the force of the hit and the game’s situation as factors that warranted supplemental discipline. The game was already out of reach when the hit took place.
Andersson’s suspension will result in a loss of nearly $95,000 in pay, with the funds directed to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. The suspension not only impacts the player but also the Flames, who will have to adjust their lineup during his absence.
