Now that Nazem Kadri has signed with the Calgary Flames, let’s look at why he did not become a New York Islander.
NHL trade rumors all offseason had Kadri signing with the New York Islanders. Most NHL Analysts figured a deal was in place and because it was Lou Lamoriello, everyone was waiting for an announcement to come at some point in late August.
Elliotte Friedman was talking with the NHL Network and the reason why he thinks Kadri never ended up being an Islander is they just did not have the salary cap space to fit Kadri’s $7 million/year asking price.
The Isles have over $11 million in cap space this summer but they have Noah Dobson, Alexander Romanov and Kieffer Bellows to sign. That will eat up most of their remaining cap space.
The Isles could not find any takers for Josh Bailey or Anthony Beauvillier to free up cap space to take on Kadri’s cap hit.
