The Stanley Cup chase is intensifying, and with it comes a frenzy of potential trade activity. One player who’s drawing significant interest is New Jersey Devils forward Tyler Toffoli. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has revealed that Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald is fielding multiple inquiries about the veteran winger, and while he’s hesitant to move Toffoli, a deal might become unavoidable.
Among those showing serious interest are the Edmonton Oilers. If GM Ken Holland can work out the logistics, Toffoli could be an excellent piece to add to their offensive puzzle.
Why Toffoli to the Oilers Makes Sense
The Oilers have made no secret of their desire to upgrade their top-six forward group. While they boast the dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the supporting cast lacks consistency. Toffoli, a proven scorer with a knack for the clutch, would be a major boost.
He’s capable of playing on either wing within Edmonton’s offensive scheme, and his right-handed shot offers versatility. He’s currently on pace for a strong 60-point season, but slotting him next to stars like McDavid or Draisaitl could easily elevate his production even further.
The Challenge and the Potential
The primary obstacle is fitting Toffoli in under the Oilers’ tight salary cap. Ken Holland will have to get creative, potentially shedding salary elsewhere to make it work. Edmonton doesn’t have a wealth of appealing trade chips, but they do have some intriguing young prospects teams might be interested in.
If the Oilers can finagle the cap space and put forth a compelling enough package, Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald might find the offer too good to refuse.
