Explore why Ryan O'Reilly could be the solution for the Toronto Maple Leafs' playoff struggles.

The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves at a crossroads as they look to solidify their lineup ahead of another playoff push. With reports indicating the Leafs want to acquire a third-line center with term, former NHL player and hockey analyst Mike Johnson offered an intriguing suggestion on TSN Radio 1050: Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators.

Why Ryan O’Reilly Could Be the Ideal Third-Line Center for the Leafs

O’Reilly, a proven leader and former Conn Smythe Trophy winner, is an attractive option for Toronto. Known for his two-way play, faceoff prowess, and ability to deliver in clutch moments, O’Reilly would bring invaluable playoff experience to a team that has struggled to get over the hump in the postseason.

Johnson noted that the Leafs’ recurring playoff issue isn’t just defensive lapses but a lack of secondary scoring when it matters most. Adding O’Reilly could address this gap, as his offensive skills and leadership would bolster Toronto’s middle-six depth.

The financial side of the trade, however, poses challenges. O’Reilly has two years remaining on his contract at a $4.5 million AAV, and while Toronto has $1.3 million in trade deadline space, they would likely need to utilize their $3.5 million in LTIR funds or move salary to make this deal work.

At 33 years old, O’Reilly’s best years are behind him, but his current form still makes him a valuable piece for a playoff contender. His lack of no-trade protection and an estimated acquisition cost of a third-round pick make him a relatively affordable target.

However, concerns about his age and declining production remain valid. O’Reilly turns 34 in February, and his skating has visibly slowed. While his hockey IQ compensates for some physical limitations, the Leafs must weigh whether this move would provide enough return to justify the cost and cap gymnastics.
