Picture of William Nylander. Anaheim Ducks are interested in a trade.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander are still far off on a contract. The Anaheim Ducks could be a potential trade partner.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a big decision to make on what to do with forward William Nylander. NHL rumors are going around that he is seeking a new contract worth $10 million/year.

Leafs management would like to get Nylander locked up to similar deals that Pierre-Luc Dubois ($8.5M/year) and Timo Meier ($8.8M/year) signed but if a middle ground can’t be reached, he will be traded.

Anaheim Ducks interested in William Nylander?

Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 radio and was asked about the latest on William Nylander. Dreger confirmed that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nylander are still far apart on completing a long-term contract.

Dreger feels the Leafs can’t afford the $10 million/year Nylander is seeking and they may have to go the trade route if Nylander is unwilling to accept a $8.5M – $8.9M/year deal.

The problem the Leafs will have in trading Nylander is not many teams can afford trading for a $10 million/year player.

One team that could have interest in Nylander is the Anaheim Ducks. They have the assets and salary cap space to offer the Leafs to complete a trade.

What are Leaf fans saying about a potential William Nylander trade?

As a leaf fan, I rather have Nylander over Matthews and Marner. He shows up under pressure, the other two do not.

I expect a trade to happen very soon. Nylander is worth $9 million/year but the salary cap will not allow it. Hopefully it happens before his NTC kicks in tomorrow!

No way Nylander is worth more than the following players:
David Pastrnak
Mitch Marner
Mark Stone
Matthew Tkachuk
Nikita Kucherov
Mikko Rantanen

  1. To add, William Nylander does not play on the Penalty Kill. Marner does. Matthews isn’t asked to play on the PK. Ever ask why there is a perception that Marner doesn’t produce more in the playoffs even though Marner and Matthews aren’t the issue but rather the Leafs third and fourth line players don’t contribute in the playoffs? This is all Leafs Management’s fault for not being capable of icing a worthy team for the city to compete and win a Stanley Cup!

  2. Hi.
I am going to state the obvious. William Nylander is not a 10 million AAV player. More like 8 million AAV. Marner is more like a 9 million AAV because he is asked to do more than Nylander and Matthews is a 10 milliom AAV player because Goal scoring is valued highly. Dubas ruined the Leafs by overpaying for Matthews and Marner.
