For those who do not subscribe to The Athletic, they have put out their annual top 100 NHL players for the 2022-2023 season and broken them down into tier levels.
The players are separated into four tiers – Tier 1 (MVP), Tier 2 (Franchise), Tier 3 (All-Star) and Tier 4 (Top Line).
Which NHL players are rated the most elite Tier 1 (MVP)?
The very top tier players in the 1A category are Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid and Cale Makar. They are the best of the best in the NHL this coming season.
Connor McDavid is still top dog as he proved with his 2022 playoff performance.
What do you think about the Tier 1 NHL player selections?
Tier 2 Franchise rated NHL players
In the 2A rated section, The Athletic have Kirill Kaprizov, Mitch Marner, Mikko Rantanen, Adam Fox and Charlie McAvoy rated as franchise NHL players.
Should Johnny Gaudreau, Artemi Panarin or Aaron Ekblad be rated as a 2A player instead of 2B or 2C players?

Tier 3 All-Star rated NHL players
For the Tier 3 All-Star NHL players for the 2022-2023 season The Athletic have Jack Eichel, Jonathan Huberdeau, Jack Hughes, Gabriel Landeskog, Mark Stone, John Carlson, Shea Theodore and Devon Toews leading the pack of All-Stars.
Thomas Chabot could have a big break out year with the newly revamped Ottawa Senators and if Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson puts up another 80 points campaign, he should not be a 3C player.

Tier 4 Top Line rated NHL Players
For the Tier 4 Top line NHL players for the 2022-2023 season The Athletic have Kevin Fiala, Dylan Larkin, William Nylander, Brady Tkachuk, Tomas Hertl and John Tavares leading the pack of Top Line players.
If Nazem Kadri can put up another year of stellar numbers with the Calgary Flames, he should move up from the 4B rated section Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin could turn into an elite defenceman if he continues to progress.
