Timo Meier has been in the NHL trade rumor mill since November when San Jose Sharks management let teams know he would be available for a trade.
With Meier having a $6 million Sharks salary cap hit, it has made it difficult for teams in the playoff hunt to add that type of salary because they are maxed out on their own salary cap.
The other HUGE issue is Meier is owed a $10 million qualifying offer in order to retain his rights and prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
If a team is giving up a lot of assets to get Meier, they will want to re-sign him long-term.
New Jersey Devils interested in a Timo Meier trade
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period is reporting the New Jersey Devils have interest in a Timo Meier trade. They would like to add another top-six forward to the lineup.
The Devils have a lot of young assets and draft currency to use as trade bait to offer the Sharks to land Meier.
Meier currently has 47 points (27g, 20a) in 47 games played. His next contract could hover around the $8.5 million/year mark.
