The Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a dismal start this season. With a 6-9-3 record and a -22 goal differential, fans and analysts alike are starting to question whether it’s time for a rebuild. At the center of this conversation is the Penguins’ captain and face of the franchise, Sidney Crosby.
Crosby, a future Hall of Famer, has two years remaining on his contract with an $8.7 million cap hit. He also possesses a full no-movement clause (NMC), giving him complete control over his future. But with the Penguins seemingly years away from contending, the question arises: could Sidney Crosby waive his NMC and request a trade?
Crosby Trade Destinations: Where Could Sid Land?
The idea of Crosby leaving Pittsburgh seems unthinkable, but the possibility is gaining traction. TSN hockey analyst Mike Johnson recently suggested that if Crosby wants another shot at the Stanley Cup, the Colorado Avalanche would be an ideal destination. Crosby has a close relationship with Nathan MacKinnon, and slotting him in as the second-line center behind MacKinnon would create a formidable one-two punch down the middle.
Johnson also mentioned the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights as potential landing spots. The Leafs, with their offensive firepower, could certainly use Crosby’s playmaking abilities and leadership. Vegas, always in win-now mode, could see Crosby as the missing piece to their Stanley Cup puzzle.
However, any potential trade comes with significant hurdles. Crosby’s $8.7 million cap hit would be difficult for any team to absorb, especially contenders who are already pressed against the salary cap. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether Crosby would even entertain the idea of leaving Pittsburgh, the only NHL city he’s ever known.
Despite the challenges, the rumors persist. Crosby’s loyalty to Pittsburgh is unquestionable, but his competitive fire and desire to win another Stanley Cup could ultimately lead him to explore his options.
