The Calgary Flames, once a powerhouse in the Western Conference, have seemingly embraced a full-fledged rebuild, and defenseman Rasmus Andersson finds himself at the center of trade discussions.
Recent reports from NHL insider David Pagnotta suggest that the Flames are actively fielding calls on Andersson, signaling a potential departure before the 2024-25 NHL season kicks off in October.
Andersson’s Departure Looms as Flames Embrace Youth Movement
This news shouldn’t come as a complete surprise to keen observers of the Flames. With two-years remaining on his contract and limited no-trade protection, Andersson’s future in Calgary has been uncertain for some time now. The Flames’ front office, led by General Manager Craig Conroy, appears committed to accumulating draft picks and prospects to bolster their organizational depth. Andersson, a skilled and reliable defenseman, represents a valuable trade chip that could accelerate their rebuilding efforts.
The potential trade of Andersson marks a significant turning point for the Flames. It signifies a willingness to part ways with established veterans in favor of a youth movement. While Andersson’s departure would undoubtedly leave a void on the blue line, it would also create opportunities for younger players to step up and assume more prominent roles.
Several teams across the league are likely monitoring the Andersson situation closely. Contenders seeking to solidify their defensive corps could view him as an attractive addition. Rebuilding teams might also be interested in acquiring Andersson, hoping to leverage his potential for future success.
The trade market for defensemen can be unpredictable, and the return for Andersson remains to be seen. However, the Flames will undoubtedly seek a package that aligns with their long-term vision. Draft picks, particularly in the early rounds, would be highly coveted, as they would provide the Flames with the opportunity to select promising young talent. Prospects who are close to NHL-ready could also be included in any potential deal.
As the NHL offseason progresses, the Rasmus Andersson trade saga will undoubtedly capture the attention of fans and analysts alike. The Flames’ decision to actively shop Andersson underscores their commitment to reshaping their roster and building for the future. While the departure of a player of Andersson’s caliber would be bittersweet for Flames fans, it could ultimately pave the way for a brighter tomorrow in Calgary.

Calgary is listening to offers but it’ll take a really good to get Andersson now. He won’t be sold cheap and if anyone thinks having a bit of a down year due to recovering from literally being hit by truck they’re dreaming.
Andersson has 2 years left on his contract at a team friendly cap hit. Calgary is no rush to move him just for the sake of moving. Unless they get an offer that blows their socks off they’ll be perfectly content to wait until near the trade deadline or until next year to decide if they’ll even trade him at all.
