It’s been a tumultuous start to the season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the uncertainty surrounding their goaltending situation is a major cause for concern. Tristan Jarry, who just last year signed a 5-year, $26.9 million contract extension, has failed to live up to expectations. After losing the starting job to Alex Nedeljkovic at the end of last season and with a shaky start to this one, the Penguins are left with a difficult decision: what to do with their struggling netminder?
While it’s still early in the season, Jarry’s performance has been far from reassuring. He currently holds a 5.47 GA and a .836 save perecentage, numbers that are simply not good enough for a goalie with his contract. The Penguins, a team with playoff aspirations, need consistent and reliable goaltending to be competitive. Right now, Jarry isn’t providing that.
Tristan Jarry’s Future in Pittsburgh Uncertain After Shaky Start
The situation is further complicated by Alex Nedeljkovic’s eventual return from injury. Nedeljkovic proved himself capable of stealing the starting role last season, and he’ll be hungry to reclaim his spot. This leaves the Penguins with three goalies (including rookie Joel Blomqvist) vying for playing time, creating a potentially awkward and unsustainable dynamic.
Trading Jarry seems like the most logical solution, but his contract and recent performance make him a tough sell. It’s unlikely any team will be willing to take on his $5.375 million cap hit without the Penguins sweetening the deal, either by retaining salary or taking back an undesirable contract in return.
A buyout is another option, but it’s a costly one. While it would provide some cap relief in the short term, the Penguins would be on the hook for a significant amount of dead cap space in the following seasons. This could severely hamper their ability to make other moves to improve the roster.
The Penguins are in a tough spot. They’ve invested heavily in Jarry, but his performance hasn’t justified the cost. With limited options and the pressure to contend for a championship, General Manager Kyle Dubas faces a critical decision that could significantly impact the franchise’s future.
