The Patrik Laine rumors are heating up again, and this time they center on whether the Montreal Canadiens will buy out or trade the underperforming winger this summer.
When Montreal acquired Laine, expectations were high that the sniper could regain his elite scoring form. His combination of size, shot, and natural offensive instincts once made him one of the most feared wingers in the league. But this season, the fit just hasn’t been there.
After skating largely unnoticed in Games 1 and 2 of the Canadiens’ playoff run—where he was benched late in Game 2—Laine missed Games 3 and 4 with an injury. His absence has only intensified speculation about his future with the team. Now, as Montreal faces a likely first-round exit, general manager Kent Hughes is left with a critical decision.
What Will the Canadiens Do With Patrik Laine This Offseason?
Laine’s $8.7 million cap hit for the 2025-26 season looms large, especially with younger players like Lane Hutson and Kirby Dach needing new deals soon. That cap space could be better spent on bolstering the team’s growing young core.
Option 1: Trade Him
Moving Laine via trade would be ideal—but not simple. His stock is at an all-time low, and it’s unlikely any contender would absorb that full contract without some sweeteners. Montreal may have to retain salary or include a mid-round draft pick just to move him.
Option 2: Buyout
A more viable option could be a buyout. While not ideal financially, it offers flexibility. A buyout would split the cap hit over two seasons:
- 2025-26: $3.97 million
- 2026-27: $2.37 million
This scenario clears over $4.7 million in cap room for next season—space that could go toward building around Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovský, Ivan Demidov, and other emerging pieces.
From a strategic lens, a buyout offers a clean break. Laine’s skill is undeniable, but his time in Montreal has failed to meet expectations. Rather than forcing a misfit into a developing system, it might be time to cut ties and look ahead.
