Patrick Kane split image wearing Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks jerseys amid NHL free agency rumors
Patrick Kane is reportedly weighing a hometown move to the Buffalo Sabres against a return to the Chicago Blackhawks, where he became an NHL legend.

Patrick Kane may be approaching the final, and most emotionally complicated decision of his NHL career.

According to Chicago Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios, Kane has narrowed his free-agent options to the Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres. One destination would allow Kane to return to the franchise where he became an NHL icon. The other would bring the Buffalo native home to play in front of his family and childhood community.

Chelios said he recently spoke with Kane and described the decision as a difficult one. Chicago offers history, familiarity, and the possibility of finishing his career where it began. Buffalo offers a meaningful homecoming and perhaps a better opportunity to help a team that believes it is ready to move forward.

My immediate read is that Chicago has the emotional advantage, but Buffalo may have the more compelling hockey argument. Kane is not simply deciding where to play another season. He is potentially deciding how he wants the final chapter of his Hall of Fame career to be remembered.

Patrick Kane Reportedly Choosing Between the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres

Chelios revealed Kane’s apparent final two choices during an appearance on The Score.

“It is down to Buffalo and Chicago. I know that, obviously, because I spoke to him.”

A return to the Chicago Blackhawks would immediately become one of the biggest NHL stories of the offseason. Kane was selected first overall by Chicago in the 2007 NHL Draft and helped deliver three Stanley Cup championships to the organization.

He would not be returning as the player expected to carry the franchise for 82 games. Instead, Kane could serve as a veteran offensive specialist, power-play creator and mentor for Chicago’s younger forwards.

That experience could become even more important with Connor Bedard expected to miss the beginning of the 2026-27 season following shoulder surgery. Chicago will need additional creativity in its top six, particularly during the opening portion of the schedule.

Why a Chicago Blackhawks Reunion Makes Sense

The strongest argument for Chicago is not simply nostalgia. Kane can still produce.

He recorded 16 goals and 41 assists for 57 points in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2025-26 season. Those numbers suggest he remains capable of creating offence, operating a power play and producing alongside skilled linemates.

Kane could help stabilize the Blackhawks while Bedard recovers. Once Bedard returns, Chicago could use Kane on a separate scoring line or place the two together when the team needs additional offensive pressure.

The Blackhawks also have more than enough salary-cap flexibility. Based on current projected figures, Chicago has approximately $29.31 million in cap space. A hypothetical one-year contract carrying a $3 million cap hit would leave the Blackhawks with approximately $26.31 million available before other roster adjustments.

Chicago could therefore offer Kane a competitive base salary, performance bonuses, and a clearly defined offensive role without creating a cap problem.

Why the Buffalo Sabres Could Be the Better Hockey Fit

Buffalo offers Kane something Chicago cannot: the opportunity to play for his hometown team.

Kane was born in Buffalo and grew up in Western New York. Signing with the Sabres would make life easier for his parents, family, and friends while giving him the opportunity to contribute to a franchise that has spent years attempting to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

From a roster perspective, Kane could provide the Sabres with another playmaker, a proven power-play option and a veteran who understands the pressure surrounding an organization trying to take its next step.

Buffalo’s cap situation is tighter. The Sabres currently project to have approximately $5.12 million in available space. A hypothetical $3 million Kane contract would reduce that amount to roughly $2.12 million. Buffalo also projects to have a full 23-player roster, meaning a corresponding roster move would likely be required.

TeamCurrent Projected Cap SpaceSpace After Hypothetical $3M Kane ContractPrimary Attraction
Chicago Blackhawks$29.31 million$26.31 millionLegacy, familiar organization and major offensive role
Buffalo Sabres$5.12 million$2.12 millionHometown return and potential playoff push

These calculations use publicly available projected cap figures and do not account for subsequent signings, assignments, trades or performance-bonus structures.

My Take: Patrick Kane Ultimately Returns to Chicago

My prediction is that Kane returns to the Chicago Blackhawks, although I would only place the probability at approximately 55 percent.

Buffalo has a powerful emotional pitch because it is Kane’s hometown. The Sabres can also sell him on helping an improving roster reach another level. However, Kane’s relationship with Chicago is different. His number will eventually hang from the United Center rafters, and he will forever be associated with the Blackhawks’ championship era.

Returning now would give Kane the opportunity to finish his career on his terms. He could mentor Chicago’s young players, help carry the offence until Bedard returns and receive a proper farewell from the fan base that watched him become one of the greatest American-born players in NHL history.

There are no guarantees Kane will make the Blackhawks a playoff team. There are also no guarantees Buffalo will reach the postseason if he signs with the Sabres. This decision may therefore come down to legacy rather than standings.
