The Ottawa Senators’ blue line is undergoing a transformation. Jake Sanderson’s rapid growth has him poised to become the team’s top defenseman.

As The Athletic’s Ian Mendes observes, GM Steve Staios might soon be facing a difficult choice between Thomas Chabot and Jakob Chychrun this offseason.

With Chabot’s no-trade clause taking effect on July 1, a decision looms large.

Is Thomas Chabot’s Time in Ottawa Nearing an End?

With Chabot, Chychrun and Sanderson all skilled left-shot defensemen, the Senators may see redundancy on the left side. This begs the question – will Chabot still be wearing a Senators jersey past the summer?

A Chabot trade could yield a significant return, possibly including the right-shot defenseman Ottawa desperately needs. Such a move would solidify the team’s strategy while clearing cap space for future moves.

The coming weeks will be telling for the Ottawa Senators. Whatever the outcome, Chabot’s departure would mark the end of an era and pave the way for a promising young blueline led by Sanderson.

  1. Chabot will not be easy to trade, even before his NTC kicks in. He is oft injured, and is adequate (at best) defensively. It might even require a sweetener to get rid of his big long term contract. And the return would probably be moderate, not significant. My Red Wings need help on D, and I would not want Chabot here at any price
