Derek Stepan is looking to be traded from the Ottawa Senators. His cap hit of $6.5 million could make a trade difficult.

Elliotte Friedman was on his Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada and he is reporting the Ottawa Senators are looking to trade Derek Stepan.

“Ottawa is moving to try and make a move with Derek Stepan,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said. “I don’t think this is a performance issue as much as it’s a family issue. He’s away from his family and I think they want to get him closer.”

Stepan, 30, spent several seasons with the New York Rangers and Arizona Coyotes prior to joining the Senators in a December trade.

Derek Stepan’s salary cap hit is $6.5 million this year. He will be a UFA once the season is done. His cap hit will make a trade very tough, and the Senators would rather not retain some of his salary in a trade. This would be a salary dump trade with 5th-7th round picks coming back to the Sens.
