Nikolaj Ehlers becomes Denmark’s highest-scoring NHL player with 474 points
Nikolaj Ehlers makes history, surpassing Frans Nielsen as Denmark’s top NHL scorer with 474 points in Winnipeg’s win over Tampa Bay.

In a memorable night for Winnipeg and an iconic moment for Denmark’s hockey history, Nikolaj Ehlers secured his place as the highest-scoring Danish player in NHL history.

With an empty-net goal in Winnipeg’s 7-4 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ehlers notched his 474th career point, surpassing Frans Nielsen’s previous record of 473 points. This achievement not only celebrates Ehlers’ contribution to the Winnipeg Jets but also places him as a central figure in Danish sports lore.

Ehlers Breaks Frans Nielsen’s Record to Lead All Danish NHL Scorers

Reflecting on his milestone, Ehlers expressed his admiration for the Danish players who came before him. “There’s been a lot of really good Danish NHL players so far. I’ve played with most of them, so that’s pretty cool for me, too. They’ve been idols to me. To be up there now, it’s a pretty cool feeling,” he shared. Growing up watching players like Frans Nielsen, Ehlers developed a profound respect for his countrymen who paved the way in the NHL.

Frans Nielsen, a prominent figure for Danish hockey fans, had held the scoring record since 2021. With an impressive career spanning time with the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings, Nielsen was a role model for young Danish athletes like Ehlers. “Obviously I’m very proud of this,” Ehlers remarked. “There’s Danish guys that I’ve watched growing up, and Frans was obviously one of them. He was an outstanding player in this league. Lucky enough I got to play with him at the World Championships in his last year. It’s a very proud moment. Very happy.”

Ehlers had already tied the record by assisting on a goal by teammate Logan Stanley earlier in the second period. This brought him within striking distance of Nielsen’s mark, and with his late-game empty-netter, he made history. Ehlers admitted that he was so focused on the game that he almost forgot the importance of the moment. “I knew I was one point off getting to the same as him,” he said. “And I forgot there after the empty-netter, I forgot for a second. And then I asked (Mark Scheifele) to go get the puck. It was pretty cool.”

This achievement reflects Ehlers’ consistency and dedication on the ice, and it highlights the growing influence of Danish players in the NHL. From his early days in Aalborg, Denmark, to being a franchise cornerstone in Winnipeg, Ehlers’ journey is inspiring young Danish players and fans alike.
