Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Trade Rumors December 20, 2018
The Toronto Maples will look to make some trades to add toughness to the team.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs add some toughness?

TSN: Craig Button states the Toronto Maple Leafs are a serious Stanley Cup contender. But each season brings different opportunities. The key question for the Maple Leafs is “How do they maximize this season’s opportunity without compromising the future?”

T he Leafs have…cap space – almost $6 million at this point in time. Button suggests the Leafs target Alex Edler of the Vancouver Canucks – a big shot on the power play and plays the most significant minutes for any Vancouver defenceman. No one knows Detroit blueliners Niklas Kronwall better than former Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.

Babcock says he wants heavier forwards who can grind it out, outside the dots.  Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds, a UFA next summer, is a great scoring presence on the power play and he plays a heavy game.

Micheal Ferland of the Carolina Hurricanes once played with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan in Calgary. He contributes offensively and can create a lot of space for his linemates.

New York Rangers looking to make some trades

The Fourth Period: Even though the New York Rangers are contending for a playoff spot, GM Jeff Gorton is still focused on the rebuild of the team.

Forwards Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes are set to become unrestricted free agents after the season and both are likely to be dealt by the Feb. 25 trade deadline. Jeff Gorton has already fielded calls for both players .

The Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks and Boston Bruins are all in the market for additional scoring and could knock on Gorton’s door in the New Year.
