NHL News is moving quickly on September 14, 2026, with several significant developments arriving just days before training camps get underway. The biggest unresolved story remains Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets, but Monday also brought major contract and leadership news involving the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders.
Buffalo made one of the day’s biggest commitments by signing Noah Ostlund to an eight-year extension worth $6.6 million annually. Montreal continued a busy stretch by extending head coach Martin St. Louis after also locking up Zachary Bolduc on a four-year deal. On Long Island, Bo Horvat officially became the 16th captain in Islanders history. Meanwhile, despite growing speculation surrounding Hellebuyck, there is still no confirmed trade. That distinction matters: his desire to leave Winnipeg is established fact, but a completed blockbuster remains speculation as of Monday afternoon.
NHL News Today: Buffalo, Montreal and the Islanders Make Major Moves
The Buffalo Sabres made a major long-term bet on Noah Ostlund, signing the 22-year-old forward to an eight-year contract extension carrying a $6.6 million average annual value. Ostlund produced 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 60 games during the 2025-26 season and has quickly established himself as an important piece of Buffalo’s young core.
The timing is especially interesting. Tuesday is the final day teams can sign players to eight-year contracts before the new Collective Bargaining Agreement reduces the maximum term for new contracts to seven years. Buffalo clearly saw an opportunity to lock in cost certainty before that door closed. Head coach Lindy Ruff previously called Ostlund a “coach’s dream”, and the contract shows management views him as far more than a short-term depth piece.
My read: this is the type of contract that could look expensive during the first year or two and extremely team-friendly later. With NHL salaries escalating, Buffalo is betting on development rather than waiting for Ostlund to produce a breakout season and become considerably more expensive.
Montreal Canadiens Double Down on Martin St. Louis and Zachary Bolduc
The Canadiens had another busy day, agreeing to a multi-year extension with head coach Martin St. Louis. Montreal has improved its point total in each full season under St. Louis and reached the Eastern Conference Final in 2025-26. General manager Kent Hughes said St. Louis has done a “terrific job leading our young team.”
That move came after Montreal also secured restricted free agent Zachary Bolduc on a four-year, $16.8 million contract carrying a $4.2 million AAV. Bolduc recorded 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 78 games last season and added seven points during Montreal’s playoff run. He also finished second on the Canadiens with 170 hits.
There is a clear pattern forming in Montreal. Rather than making dramatic changes to a team that reached the conference final, Hughes is keeping much of the structure intact while selectively adding veterans such as Chris Kreider. Extending St. Louis sends the same message: management believes the Canadiens’ trajectory is legitimate and wants continuity around its young core.
Bo Horvat Named New York Islanders Captain
The New York Islanders officially named Bo Horvat their 16th captain in franchise history. Horvat replaces Anders Lee, who departed during the offseason, and brings previous captaincy experience from his time with the Vancouver Canucks.
Horvat scored a team-leading 31 goals and finished with 57 points in 68 games last season. Since arriving on Long Island in January 2023, he has produced 99 goals and 198 points in 260 games. The decision feels logical rather than ceremonial: Horvat has become one of the Islanders’ most important players and already carried a significant leadership role as an alternate captain.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors Remain NHL’s Biggest Unresolved Story
The most important distinction in today’s NHL News is that Connor Hellebuyck’s trade request is real, but reports suggesting a blockbuster is imminent remain unconfirmed.
Hellebuyck publicly confirmed on August 27 that he had requested a trade from Winnipeg several months earlier. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner is under contract for five more seasons at an $8.5 million cap hit and possesses a full no-move clause this season, giving him considerable influence over where he can go.
On Monday, Sportsnet described Winnipeg’s situation as the “Hellebuyck waiting game” and noted that general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has little incentive to accept a return he does not like simply to complete a trade before the season. Winnipeg currently has approximately $4.48 million in salary-cap space and added Stuart Skinner during the offseason, giving the Jets some insurance in goal.

Winnipeg’s leverage may actually improve as the season develops. Injuries, poor goaltending or slow starts from contenders could create greater urgency around the league — and potentially increase the return available for Hellebuyck.
That last point is why I would not assume Winnipeg must make a deal before opening night. Hellebuyck’s no-move clause complicates the market, but elite goaltenders almost never become available. A contender that isn’t prepared to meet Cheveldayoff’s price today could have a very different opinion six weeks into the season.
