Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Alex Tuch of the Washington Capitals featured in the latest NHL news and NHL rumors for October 3, 2026.
Connor Hellebuyck and Alex Tuch headline the latest NHL news, with Hellebuyck trade speculation continuing in Winnipeg and Tuch making an immediate impact in his Washington Capitals debut.

Alex Tuch did not need an adjustment period in Washington.

In his first regular-season game with the Capitals, Tuch scored twice in the opening period and helped Washington roll past the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Friday night. Tuch was acquired from Buffalo in a June sign-and-trade carrying an eight-year, $84 million contract, and his first meaningful game immediately showed why Washington was willing to make that commitment. Logan Thompson added 31 saves while Jakob Chychrun finished with a goal and an assist.

For a Capitals roster trying to remain in the championship conversation while evolving around Alex Ovechkin, this was about much more than one productive debut. Washington needs another forward capable of driving offense instead of waiting for its veteran core to manufacture every important goal.

That is what makes Tuch’s start one of the most intriguing developments in today’s NHL News and NHL Rumors and NHL Scores roundup.

NHL News Today: Alex Tuch Gives Washington a Different Look

Tuch scored Washington’s first and third goals as the Capitals built a 3-0 first-period advantage. Pierre-Luc Dubois helped create his first goal with pressure behind the Carolina net, and Tuch added another after Tom Wilson’s shot found its way through Brandon Bussi. He became just the fifth player in Capitals history to score twice in his debut with the franchise.

NHLTradeRumor.com Take: The most encouraging part for Washington was not simply Tuch scoring twice. It was how naturally his game fit alongside the Capitals’ heavier forechecking style. At 30, Washington isn’t paying for future projection. The Capitals are paying for immediate impact, and Game 1 delivered exactly that.

Carolina, meanwhile, is 0-1-1 after beginning the season with consecutive home losses. It is far too early for conclusions, but the Hurricanes have opened the year without establishing the type of territorial control normally associated with Rod Brind’Amour’s teams.

NHL Rumors: Connor Hellebuyck Trade Situation Remains Unresolved

Winnipeg finally opened its season Friday, and for the first time in more than a decade Connor Hellebuyck wasn’t the Jets’ opening-night starter.

Stuart Skinner stopped 26 shots, but Boston erased a late Winnipeg lead before JJ Peterka scored 3:21 into overtime for a 4-3 Bruins victory. Elias Lindholm tied the game with only 1:38 remaining in regulation, while Bruins rookie James Hagens scored the first goal of his NHL career.

The bigger story continues to sit outside Winnipeg’s crease.

Hellebuyck requested a trade and remains suspended after failing to report. Recent Sportsnet reporting indicates his preference is to continue his career south of the Canadian border. Edmonton has emerged as a fascinating hypothetical because of the Oilers’ unsettled goaltending situation, but the same report characterized an Edmonton outcome as a significant long shot because of Hellebuyck’s preferences, trade protection, Edmonton’s limited cap flexibility and the complicated assets required to satisfy Winnipeg.

There is no confirmed Hellebuyck-to-Edmonton trade. Right now, the Oilers angle remains a possibility being discussed around the situation rather than evidence that a deal is close.

My read is that Friday’s game actually strengthens Winnipeg’s ability to remain patient. Skinner did not steal the game, but he gave the Jets a credible performance. The more stable Winnipeg looks without Hellebuyck, the less pressure management has to accept a discounted return simply to resolve the situation.

Dylan Larkin’s Absence Looms Over Detroit’s Scoreless Opener

Detroit’s season started with a 2-0 loss to the New York Rangers, with Dylan Garand making 22 saves for the first shutout of his NHL career.

The Red Wings played without injured Dylan Larkin and unsigned restricted free-agent Simon Edvinsson. Detroit generated 20 shots through two periods but only two in the third, an especially concerning number for a roster already dealing with uncertainty around one of its most important offensive players.

Whatever eventually happens with Larkin’s trade request, Detroit received an immediate reminder Friday of how difficult replacing his offense would be.

Ducks Keep Investing in Their Young Core

Anaheim also opened its season with a statement, building a 4-0 lead before surviving a Vegas comeback for a 4-3 victory.

Leo Carlsson recorded a goal and an assist and Lukas Dostal made 27 saves. The result arrived alongside another major organizational commitment: Anaheim has signed 22-year-old defenseman Tristan Luneau to a six-year, $43.2 million extension carrying a $7.2 million average annual value beginning next season. Luneau responded with an assist, a plus-3 rating and 26:58 of ice time in Friday’s opener.

Fourteen NHL games is an extremely small sample for that type of contract. Anaheim is clearly betting on projection rather than résumé, but Luneau’s workload against Vegas suggests the Ducks intend to give him every opportunity to grow into that valuation.

Senators Get Jake Sanderson Back for Battle of Ontario

Ottawa received positive news Saturday: Jake Sanderson will play in the Senators’ season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs after returning from the issue that kept him out following a September 26 preseason game. Warren Foegele is also expected to play.

Sanderson’s availability is significant against a Toronto lineup that has already undergone major early-season changes and added Kirill Marchenko before Opening Night.
