What a night for NHL news! Wednesday, November 5, 2025, is a date that will be etched in hockey history forever. We all knew it was coming, but Alex Ovechkin has done the unthinkable. “The Great 8” has officially become the first player in the 108-year history of the National Hockey League to score 900 career goals.

This monumental, barrier-breaking goal came in the Washington Capitals‘ dominant 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

The Great 8 Makes History

The historic moment happened at 2:39 of the second period. Ovechkin, doing what he does best, found a loose puck off a Jakob Chychrun rebound and buried a backhander past Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington.

The 40-year-old superstar was immediately mobbed by his teammates as the Capitals’ bench cleared to celebrate the milestone. In a bizarre and somewhat hilarious footnote, Binnington actually grabbed the milestone puck and tried to hide it in his pants, but officials eventually retrieved it for the future Hall of Famer.

Ovechkin’s 900th goal is a testament to his incredible durability, lethal shot, and relentless drive. He now stands alone at the top of a mountain no one else has ever reached. The Capitals, who had been on a four-game losing streak, rode the emotional high, with Tom Wilson and Anthony Beauvillier each potting two goals in the win.

Injury Bugs and Roster Shakeups

While Washington celebrated, other teams were dealing with serious lineup news. The Pittsburgh Penguins, a key rival, were hit hard today. It was announced that starting goaltender Tristan Jarry will be out for a minimum of three weeks with a lower-body injury. To make matters worse, forwards Noel Acciari and Justin Brazeau are also sidelined for at least four weeks.

On the positive side of NHL news, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally got some help. Scott Laughton made his season debut tonight against the Utah Mammoth after missing the start of the year with a lower-body injury. Elsewhere, the Vancouver Canucks were thrilled to see Conor Garland back on the ice for their late-night matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks.
