The biggest fantasy storyline in Washington on Wednesday, October 14, isn’t simply whether Nick Suzuki keeps producing or Alex Ovechkin converts another power-play chance. It’s the first NHL meeting between brothers Lane and Cole Hutson, two offensive defensemen whose ice time could reveal plenty about their fantasy ceilings.
Montreal arrives 3-2-1 after Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout win over Buffalo. Washington is 3-3-0 following a 4-2 loss to Carolina. Both teams are playing on consecutive nights, which raises questions about fatigue, lineup decisions and the starting goaltenders. Suzuki has eight points in six games, Lane Hutson has six, and Ryan Leonard leads Washington with six.
Here’s the matchup I find most interesting: Montreal is allowing 3.67 goals per game, but Washington’s power play has converted only 13.3% of its chances. Can the Capitals turn defensive openings into quality looks? And with Washington missing defensemen, will Cole Hutson earn extra offensive responsibility? For fantasy managers, those deployment answers may matter more than the final score.

Montreal has scored 17 goals and allowed 22. Washington has scored 19 and conceded 18. Washington has an early scoring and defensive edge, though the sample is small.
Montreal’s power play is clicking at 10.0%, compared with 13.3% for Washington. The Canadiens’ penalty kill stands at 80.8% and the Capitals’ at 86.4%. Tonight’s special teams could swing fantasy points.
Washington won two of three meetings last season, including an 8-4 game and a 3-2 overtime win; Montreal answered with a 6-2 victory. Expect scoring volatility.
What I’m watching: tired legs. Late-shift breakdowns could benefit top-six forwards.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Canadiens vs. Capitals
Nick Suzuki is Montreal’s safest points-floor play. He has three goals, five assists and an average ice time of 22:19. Cole Caufield offers greater pure finishing upside, with three goals and 24 shots. Lane Hutson, averaging 26:49 with six points, is my preferred Montreal defenseman because his workload creates repeated opportunities.
Juraj Slafkovský has 18 shots. Demidov’s absence may also boost Zachary Bolduc or Chris Kreider.
Washington’s most interesting forward is Ryan Leonard, with two goals and four assists despite averaging only 13:41. Tom Wilson adds five points and physical-category value. Alex Ovechkin has two points, but reduced minutes lower his floor.
On defense, Jakob Chychrun brings shot volume, while Cole Hutson has three points and a possible opening for greater responsibility with Rasmus Sandin injured. His power-play role and both starters remain unconfirmed.
These are my estimated single-game point ranges, not guarantees. These projections assume the player dresses and receives meaningful minutes.
Top Five Canadiens and Capitals Fantasy Scorers for This Season
NHLTradeRumor.com Scoring Index: Each player’s point total is indexed against his team’s leading scorer. This visualization describes past production and is not a future projection. Chris Kreider is also tied at four points for Montreal.
The chart reflects six games, not full-season projections. Suzuki leads Montreal with eight points; Lane Hutson follows with six. Leonard leads Washington with six, ahead of Wilson and Dylan Strome with five apiece.
Last season offers better context. Montreal’s five leaders in 2025-26 were Suzuki (29 G, 72 A, 101 P), Caufield (51-37-88), Lane Hutson (12-66-78), Slafkovský (30-43-73) and Demidov (19-43-62). Washington’s leaders were Ovechkin (32-32-64), Wilson (30-32-62), Chychrun (26-34-60), Strome (19-39-58) and Aliaksei Protas (25-27-52).
My fantasy takeaway: trust repeatable usage indicators, shots, minutes, power-play involvement, more than a six-game scoring race. Leonard’s start is encouraging, but his workload remains a meaningful question.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Montreal lists Demidov, Oliver Kapanen and Sam Montembeault on injured reserve; Mike Matheson is out. All are injury absences. Demidov’s absence could open top-six opportunities for available wingers; Matheson’s could shift further puck-moving work toward Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson. Montembeault’s absence makes the Fowler–Dobeš choice critical.
Washington has Rasmus Sandin on long-term injured reserve and Matt Roy on injured reserve. Pierre-Luc Dubois has been listed out with illness; his game-day availability requires confirmation. Sandin’s absence could benefit Cole Hutson and Chychrun.
Check morning-skate lines and power-play units; none are confirmed here.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Washington Capitals Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Montreal Canadiens 3 – Washington Capitals 4
I’m leaning Washington in a competitive, moderately high-scoring matchup. Washington returns home while Montreal travels after a shootout. The Capitals’ defensive edge matters.
For fantasy purposes, I like Suzuki’s workload and Caufield’s shot volume regardless of my predicted winner. Leonard and Wilson are strong Washington options, while Ovechkin can still finish a premium chance despite reduced minutes. The confirmed goalies could change my pick.
More important than the score: whether Lane and Cole Hutson gain first-unit power-play opportunities, whether Leonard’s ice time increases, and who receives Demidov’s vacant offensive minutes. Those clues outlast tonight.
