The Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins both carry perfect records into Saturday night, but the fantasy hockey question is which opening-night performance is more sustainable.
Montreal’s 3-2 victory over Toronto did not produce points from Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Lane Hutson or Ivan Demidov, yet the Canadiens still found enough offense from Josh Anderson, Zachary Bolduc and Alexandre Carrier to win. Pittsburgh’s opener was the opposite: a 7-0 avalanche in Philadelphia featuring seven goals from six different players, two power-play goals and contributions throughout the lineup.
For fantasy managers, my biggest focus on October 3 is Pittsburgh’s ability to reproduce that offensive depth against a far stronger Montreal team. The Canadiens won 48 games and reached the Eastern Conference Final last season, while Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson and Juraj Slafkovsky all established legitimate high-end fantasy ceilings. Pittsburgh still has Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson driving the attack, and Kuzmenko’s expected debut gives the lineup another scoring option.
The matchup I want to watch most closely is Montreal’s top-end skill against Pittsburgh’s special teams.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Montreal was the stronger team over the complete 2025-26 regular season, finishing 48-24-10 with 106 points. The Canadiens scored 279 goals, allowed 251 and averaged 3.40 goals per game. Their power play converted at 23.1 percent, while the penalty kill finished at 78.2 percent.
Pittsburgh finished 41-25-16 with 98 points, scoring an impressive 290 goals but allowing 258. The Penguins averaged 3.54 goals per game, owned a 24.1 percent power play and killed 81.4 percent of opposing opportunities.
That makes this an intriguing fantasy matchup. Montreal was better overall, but Pittsburgh actually scored more goals and had stronger special teams.
The Canadiens also gave Pittsburgh problems head-to-head last season. Montreal won 4-2 in Pittsburgh on December 11 and followed that with a 4-0 shutout on December 20. Pittsburgh avoided the season sweep the next night with a 4-3 shootout victory.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Canadiens vs. Penguins
Montreal’s fantasy ceiling starts with Suzuki and Caufield. Suzuki erupted for 101 points last season, while Caufield scored 51 goals and finished with 88 points. Lane Hutson added 78 points from the blue line. All three went scoreless against Toronto, which actually makes this matchup more interesting to me: Montreal won without its biggest fantasy stars producing.
The Canadiens have also changed their even-strength look. Recent practice work has Chris Kreider alongside Suzuki and Caufield, while Juraj Slafkovsky has skated with Alex Newhook and Ivan Demidov. Phillip Danault centered Alexandre Texier and Kirby Dach at Friday’s practice.
Pittsburgh’s fantasy hierarchy still begins with Crosby, Karlsson and Rickard Rakell. Crosby recorded 74 points in only 68 games last season, while Karlsson produced 66 in 75. Karlsson also has 44 points in 55 career games against Montreal, and Rakell has 13 points in his past nine against the Canadiens.
One name I am watching beyond the obvious stars is Nick Robertson. He scored twice in his Penguins debut Wednesday while playing alongside Crosby. Kuzmenko’s return also creates another variable because Pittsburgh is still sorting through combinations while Rust, Ben Kindel and Justin Brazeau recover from injuries.

Top Five Canadiens and Penguins Fantasy Scorers From Last Season
Montreal’s top five illustrates why its fantasy ceiling is so attractive. Suzuki reached 101 points, Caufield scored 51 goals, Hutson generated 66 assists from defense, Slafkovsky reached 30 goals and Demidov led rookies with 62 points.
Pittsburgh’s leader was Crosby with 74 points, followed by Karlsson at 66, Rust at 65, Anthony Mantha at 64 and Malkin at 61. Mantha is now with New Jersey, while Rust is currently injured, making the historical comparison important but not identical to tonight’s lineup.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Montreal remains without Kaiden Guhle, who underwent adductor surgery and is expected to miss several weeks. Oliver Kapanen has been dealing with a lower-body injury after originally being slated to center Slafkovsky and Demidov. His absence opened that second-line center role for Newhook.
For fantasy purposes, Newhook is the main beneficiary. Playing between Slafkovsky and Demidov gives him substantially more offensive upside than a utility role lower in the lineup.
Pittsburgh’s absences are more significant. Rust, Kindel, Brazeau and Ryan Graves are on injured reserve, while Blake Lizotte is day-to-day. Rust is particularly important because he recorded 65 points last season and usually plays alongside Crosby.
Robertson has taken advantage, scoring twice beside Crosby on opening night.
Kuzmenko’s expected return adds another layer. Pittsburgh confirmed he practiced Friday and is expected to debut against Montreal after returning from Russia following his father’s death.
Neither starting goalie had been officially confirmed in the first-party sources I reviewed this morning. Dobes made 26 saves in Montreal’s opener, while Silovs recorded a 19-save shutout for Pittsburgh. I would recheck both starters before publication.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Salary-Cap Snapshot
We currently list Montreal with $1.89 million in projected cap space and a $102.11 million projected cap hit. Pittsburgh has significantly more flexibility at approximately $7.12 million in projected space and a $96.88 million projected hit.
Pittsburgh’s additional flexibility provides more room for recalls and future roster changes as its injured players return. Montreal is operating much closer to the ceiling, although that does not directly tell us anything about tonight’s result.
Montreal Canadiens vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Montreal Canadiens 4 – Pittsburgh Penguins 3
I think this is considerably closer than Pittsburgh’s opener.
The Penguins deserve respect after scoring seven times against Philadelphia, especially because the production came throughout the lineup rather than entirely from Crosby. But Montreal represents a meaningful upgrade in opposition. The Canadiens had 106 points last season, possess multiple high-end scoring lines and went 2-0-1 against Pittsburgh.
My fantasy advantage goes slightly to Montreal’s top unit. Suzuki and Caufield combined for 189 points last season, Hutson gives the power play one of the NHL’s most creative offensive defensemen, and Demidov has another year of development behind him.
Pittsburgh’s best path is special teams. The Penguins owned a 24.1 percent power play last season and scored twice with the man advantage in the opener. Montreal’s 78.2 percent penalty kill was its clearest weakness among the major team categories.
I expect Crosby to record at least one point, and Karlsson’s history against Montreal makes him one of my preferred defenseman plays. For the Canadiens, Caufield is my favorite goal-scoring target, while Suzuki has the highest multi-point ceiling.
The development that matters more to me than the final score is how Pittsburgh integrates Kuzmenko and how Montreal’s reworked lines affect Slafkovsky and Demidov. If Newhook sticks between those two and the line creates offense, there is meaningful season-long fantasy value there. On Pittsburgh’s side, Robertson’s continued deployment with Crosby could turn what looked like a short-term injury replacement into a legitimate breakout opportunity.
