The Minnesota Wild are on the hunt, and the target is clear: a legitimate first-line center. According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, Wild General Manager Bill Guerin is widely expected to revisit his aggressive search for a premium pivot. While Guerin kicked tires around the league before the March NHL trade deadline to no avail, the summer market presents a new landscape. If the Wild are serious about transforming into genuine Stanley Cup contenders next season, completing this roster puzzle is non-negotiable.
The name generating the most heat? Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin. Acquiring a player of Larkin’s caliber immediately shifts the competitive timeline in St. Paul. Imagine slotting a proven, two-way driver like Larkin between Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. It’s the kind of offensive synergy that wins playoff series. But landing a franchise cornerstone comes with a staggering price tag. Guerin has not been shy about moving assets during his tenure, which forces the front office into a massive philosophical debate: how much more of the future are they willing to mortgage for the present?
Detroit Red Wings’ Stance: Will Steve Yzerman Move Dylan Larkin?
To understand the mechanics of this potential blockbuster, we have to look across the ice at Steve Yzerman’s front office. If the Detroit Red Wings feel their current roster construction has hit a ceiling and requires a localized “reset,” Larkin suddenly becomes the most intriguing name on the summer trade block.
However, Yzerman’s “Yzerplan” is notoriously difficult to read. If Detroit’s management believes they are on the cusp of sustained playoff contention, the narrative flips entirely. In that scenario, they are far more likely to shop for depth pieces themselves rather than part ways with their heartbeat and captain. Parting with Larkin would signal a significant shift in Detroit, meaning Guerin’s offer would have to be an undeniable overpay.
Evaluating the Cost for the Minnesota Wild
If Yzerman opens the phone lines, the asking price will be astronomical. Trade discussions would undoubtedly start with top-tier prospects. The Wild would likely have to part with blue-chip assets such as highly touted goaltender Jesper Wallstedt or dynamic forward Danila Yurov. The conversation wouldn’t end there. Packages featuring Bobby Brink, Daemon Hunt, Charlie Stramel, and unprotected future first-round picks would all be on the table.
From a personal perspective, giving up Wallstedt is the ultimate gamble. You are trading a potential decade of elite goaltending for immediate offensive dominance. But for a Wild team desperate to maximize Kaprizov’s prime window, it’s a gamble Guerin might be forced to take.

I’m a DRW fan since 1960 (yeah I’m old), and I see the Wings as a few players away from making the playoffs. Trading Larkin would push them back a few more years. The fans are already on edge and calling for a GM change. A trade of Larkin and pushing the team backwards would be a career killer for Yzerman. Trade Larkin and your 4 Centers are Copp, Compher, Kasper, and Rasmussen. Unless they bring up Danielson and Lombardi, they have nothing up the middle.
Why on earth would drw ask for walstad. Drw has 4 high level goalies coming. Not to mention they pass on walstad. Starter would be quin hughes.
Never happen. I would love to see it happen but Steve doesn’t have the guts. I’m a lifetime Wings fan no matter what but this team is a disaster. I respect Yzerman certainly as one of the greatest players of all time but he needs to make drastic changes and I don’t see that happening.
