The Mitch Marner rumors are starting to swirl again, and this time, the Minnesota Wild could be in the thick of the chase. Now that Mikko Rantanen has inked a long-term deal with the Dallas Stars, all eyes turn to Marner, one of the biggest potential names in the 2025 NHL free agent market. The buzz started when NHL insider Dan Rosen mentioned that Wild GM Bill Guerin has Mitch Marner on his radar heading into a pivotal offseason.
And it’s not just idle speculation.
Could Mitch Marner Head to Minnesota This Summer?
Minnesota has long been handcuffed by the buyout penalties of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, which have chewed up over $14.7 million in cap space annually. That figure plummets to just $1.66 million per year starting in the summer of 2025. It’s a financial reset that opens the door for a major splash — and Marner would certainly qualify.
From a hockey standpoint, Marner could be a perfect fit. His elite playmaking, two-way ability, and power-play quarterbacking would instantly elevate a Minnesota offense that has struggled with consistency. Pairing Marner with Kirill Kaprizov would be a dream scenario for Wild fans, giving the team two dynamic wings capable of game-breaking offense.
However, let’s be realistic.
A Mitch Marner signing might not be as smooth as it seems. Kaprizov will require a massive contract extension soon, and Marco Rossi — coming off his entry-level deal — is also due for a raise. Guerin will need to walk a tightrope financially, and unless some significant cap-clearing trades are made, committing north of $13 million annually to Marner could limit the Wild’s flexibility.
Still, Guerin has never shied away from bold moves. Don’t be surprised if Minnesota enters the Marner sweepstakes aggressively. If the Leafs can’t re-sign him and he walks on July 1st, Minnesota’s cap freedom and hunger to make a deep playoff run might make them a serious player in the Mitch Marner free agency saga.
As a longtime follower of the Wild’s front office tendencies, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them float offers to offload contracts like Mats Zuccarello or Yakov Trenin to make room. Guerin has been building toward this cap window, and Mitch Marner could be the centerpiece of a new Wild core heading into 2025 and beyond.
