Dallas general manager Jim Nill later acknowledged that the injury prevented Rantanen from playing his usual powerful, puck-protection-heavy style. He did not require surgery and is expected to benefit from a healthier, more conventional offseason.

My projection starts with Rantanen’s 2025-26 production rate. His 77 points in 64 games worked out to 1.20 points per game. Before suffering the knee injury, he had an even more impressive 69 points in 54 games, putting him on a pace of approximately 105 points over 82 games.
I have lowered that pace slightly rather than simply projecting 105 points. Rantanen turns 30 early in the season, and Dallas has enough offensive talent that it does not need to overload one player every night. The Stars can distribute prime opportunities among Rantanen, Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston, Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene and their offensively gifted defensemen.
Still, Rantanen averaged 20:11 of ice time last season, placing him among the most heavily used Dallas forwards. The Stars are also expected to keep him alongside Johnston, with NHL.com projecting Rantanen on Dallas’ top line entering the season.
That usage should keep his fantasy floor extremely high.
Why Dallas’ Power Play Raises Rantanen’s Fantasy Ceiling
Rantanen’s greatest fantasy advantage might be his secure position on the Stars’ first power-play unit.
Dallas can deploy Rantanen with Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnston, Matt Duchene and Miro Heiskanen. That unit combines Robertson’s shooting, Johnston’s work around the slot, Duchene’s puck movement, Heiskanen’s skating and Rantanen’s ability to create offense from the flank or below the goal line.
Dallas’ power play ranked second in the NHL at 30 percent during its late-season surge. At that point, Rantanen had already collected 30 power-play points despite missing time, while Johnston, Robertson and Heiskanen were also among the league’s more productive special-teams players.
Robertson’s return is particularly significant. He signed a one-year contract with Dallas after leading the team with 96 points last season, keeping the Stars’ most dangerous power-play weapons together for another year.
For fantasy purposes, Rantanen could reasonably produce between 32 and 38 power-play points. That special-teams production gives him a clear path to a point total in the high 90s even if his five-on-five scoring fluctuates.
Can Mikko Rantanen Score 40 Goals Again?
The assists are not the biggest question in Rantanen’s projection. His goal total will ultimately determine whether he finishes around 95 points or pushes beyond 100.
His 22 goals last season were unusually low for a player with his shot, size and finishing history. Some of that decline can be connected to the time he missed and the limited power he had in his injured knee after returning. Rantanen’s game depends on balance, strength and the ability to hold defenders away from the puck while attacking dangerous areas.
A healthy Rantanen should generate more shots and finish more opportunities around the net. I have projected 37 goals, but 40 or more is entirely realistic if he plays 80-plus games and remains on Dallas’ first power-play unit throughout the season.

Conservative outcome: 33 goals, 55 assists and 88 points
Most likely outcome: 37 goals, 61 assists and 98 points
High-end outcome: 42 goals, 65 assists and 107 points
The high-end projection would require strong health and another elite season from the Dallas power play. It is not the most probable result, but it is well within Rantanen’s established offensive ability.
Mikko Rantanen’s Fantasy Hockey Draft Value
Rantanen should be treated as a first-round selection in most standard fantasy hockey formats. His combination of goals, assists, power-play production and dependable ice time gives him one of the most complete offensive profiles available.
I would be comfortable selecting him between seventh and 13th overall. Managers drafting near the turn could potentially pair Rantanen with another elite forward or a high-end defenseman, creating an excellent statistical foundation.
His injury history from last season should not be completely ignored, but the MCL issue was described as an injury that did not require surgery. That makes him less concerning than a player entering the year with an unresolved offseason procedure or uncertain recovery timeline.
The biggest mistake fantasy managers could make is evaluating Rantanen solely by his 77-point finish. His per-game production was already close to 100-point territory, and he was among the NHL’s leading scorers before the injury.
My final projection is 37 goals, 61 assists and 98 points in 79 games. I would not be surprised to see Rantanen cross 100 points if he stays healthy.
