David Pastrnak is heating up, Jake Oettinger is shutting opponents down, and Tuesday night’s Boston Bruins vs. Dallas Stars matchup could become one of the most challenging fantasy hockey games to predict this week.
The Bruins enter October 20, 2026, riding a five-game winning streak, with Pastrnak producing 10 points over that stretch. Dallas, meanwhile, has allowed an NHL-best 1.50 goals per game, and Oettinger has already recorded three shutouts.
Something has to give.
Boston’s 25.0% power play will face a Dallas penalty kill operating at 89.3%, creating an intriguing battle for fantasy managers deciding between elite offensive talent and dependable goaltending.
Another storyline deserves attention: Elias Lindholm has rediscovered his offensive touch, while injuries have created opportunities for younger players on both rosters.
My biggest question isn’t whether Pastrnak can score. It’s whether Boston can generate enough quality chances against a Dallas team that has been exceptionally difficult to beat defensively.
Below, I’ll break down my fantasy player projections, expected scoring environment, key injuries, and final score prediction.
Boston Bruins vs. Dallas Stars Game Information
Bruins vs. Stars
Bruins
Stars
Tuesday’s game takes place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, with puck drop scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
This concludes Boston’s four-game road trip, while Dallas begins a six-game homestand.
Neither team played on October 19, giving both clubs time to prepare for an important early-season interconference matchup.
Boston Bruins vs. Dallas Stars Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Boston enters with a 7-2-0 record and 14 standings points, sitting first in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins have scored 34 goals through nine games, averaging 3.78 per contest while allowing just 2.11.
Dallas owns a 4-3-1 record and nine points. The Stars have scored 19 goals through eight games, averaging 2.38, while surrendering only 12.
Those figures reveal a fascinating contrast.
Boston has been the better offensive team, but Dallas has been even more effective at limiting goals.
Why Special Teams Could Decide the Fantasy Outlook
The Bruins have converted six of their first 24 power-play opportunities, good for 25.0%.
Dallas has converted three of 20 opportunities, producing a more modest 15.0% success rate.
However, the Stars own an 89.3% penalty kill, compared with Boston’s 81.3%.
For fantasy managers, that means Pastrnak’s power-play opportunities could be considerably harder to convert than they were during Boston’s recent wins.
I also wouldn’t overlook the head-to-head history. Dallas defeated Boston 6-2 on January 20, 2026, although the Bruins won the teams’ other regular-season meeting last season.
The Stars have collected points in six of their previous nine games against Boston. Dallas is just 1-2-0 at home this season, while Boston is 4-1-0 on the road.
Those are small samples, but they reinforce why this matchup is far more competitive than the standings initially suggest.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Boston Bruins vs. Dallas Stars
David Pastrnak: Boston’s Most Reliable Fantasy Option
Pastrnak leads the Bruins with 12 points, including four goals and eight assists, through nine games.
His 34 shots on goal make him particularly appealing in formats that reward shooting volume.
I consider him Boston’s safest fantasy selection because he doesn’t need multiple goals to deliver value. His playmaking, shooting and power-play role provide several ways to contribute.
His eight-game point streak against Dallas adds another encouraging element.
Elias Lindholm and Morgan Geekie: Different Paths to Fantasy Production
Lindholm has seven points through nine games, including three goals.
According to Boston’s October 19 practice report, he has been playing with James Hagens and Casey Mittelstadt while maintaining a role on the first power-play unit.
That combination makes him one of my favourite secondary fantasy players in this matchup.
Geekie has eight points, including seven assists.
Although his goal production has started slowly, he scored 39 times last season. I expect his finishing ability to remain an important part of Boston’s offence.
If Pavel Zacha cannot play, Geekie’s line placement and offensive responsibilities become even more important.
Mikko Rantanen and Jason Robertson: Dallas’s Biggest Offensive Threats
Rantanen leads the Stars with eight points in eight games, recording two goals and six assists.
He provides Dallas with an elite offensive creator who can produce regardless of whether the team scores three goals or six.
Robertson has seven points and leads Dallas with 26 shots.
I particularly like Robertson’s history against Boston: he enters with a seven-game point streak against the Bruins.
That history doesn’t guarantee another point, but it supports his status as one of Dallas’s most attractive fantasy forwards.
Miro Heiskanen and Charlie McAvoy: Fantasy Defensemen to Monitor
Heiskanen has recorded three goals and six points through eight games while averaging more than 25 minutes of ice time.
His extensive deployment creates opportunities for assists, shots and defensive category production.
McAvoy returned to Boston’s lineup after serving a six-game suspension. His offensive upside and blocked-shot value make him worth monitoring, although his current-season sample remains small.
NHLTradeRumor.com Fantasy Matchup Projection
Six Players Who Could Shape the Game
These projections assume the player dresses and receives meaningful minutes.
My projections describe likely single-game point ranges rather than guaranteed outcomes. League scoring formats, shots, hits, blocks and goaltender rules can change each player’s overall fantasy value.
Top Five Bruins and Stars Fantasy Scorers for the 2026–27 Season
Early-season scoring trends can identify developing opportunities, but nine games shouldn’t outweigh an established player’s history.
Boston’s current scoring leaders include Pastrnak, Geekie, Fraser Minten, Lindholm and JJ Peterka.
Dallas is led by Rantanen, Robertson, Heiskanen, Roope Hintz and Tyler Seguin.
Top-Five Scoring Index
What Last Season’s Leading Scorers Tell Us
For additional context, Boston’s top five point producers in 2025-26 were Pastrnak (29 goals, 71 assists, 100 points), Geekie (39-29-68), Zacha (30-35-65), McAvoy (11-50-61) and Viktor Arvidsson (25-29-54).
Dallas’s top five were Robertson (45-51-96), Wyatt Johnston (45-41-86), Rantanen (22-55-77), Heiskanen (9-54-63) and Matt Duchene (16-29-45).
I place more weight on those full-season figures when assessing established stars, while using this October’s numbers to identify players receiving new opportunities.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Boston’s most important injury question concerns Pavel Zacha.
He missed the October 17 game against Los Angeles with an upper-body injury but participated in Monday’s practice. Coach Marco Sturm described him as a game-time decision.
His availability could affect Boston’s top-six combinations, especially the deployment of Geekie, Peterka and the younger forwards.
James Hagens is worth watching regardless. His developing chemistry with Lindholm and Mittelstadt could produce an occasional fantasy breakout performance.
Boston also has a separate lineup question involving Nikita Zadorov, who was scratched against Los Angeles for disciplinary reasons. That was not an injury absence.
Dallas faces a more substantial long-term problem.
Matt Duchene underwent surgery for a core injury and is expected to miss approximately three months.
His absence removes a proven offensive contributor and creates opportunities elsewhere in the lineup.
Arttu Hyry recently scored twice against Chicago, while newly signed David Perron could provide another experienced scoring option if he makes his Dallas debut.
I would monitor Wyatt Johnston’s deployment closely as well. He scored 45 goals last season, and his power-play finishing ability makes him an important fantasy option even though his early production has been modest.
My fantasy takeaway: The biggest potential bargains are players whose ice time or power-play roles expand because of these absences, not necessarily the players with the most recent goals.
Boston Bruins vs. Dallas Stars Fantasy Hockey Prediction
My Score Prediction: Boston Bruins 2 – Dallas Stars 3 (OT)
I’m predicting a 3-2 overtime victory for the Dallas Stars.
Boston has been the more productive offensive team, but I believe Dallas’s defensive structure and goaltending give the Stars a narrow advantage at home.
Oettinger has already posted three shutouts, and his .952 save percentage demonstrates just how difficult he has been to beat.
If he starts, I expect Boston to generate chances without converting at its usual rate.
Jeremy Swayman has also been excellent, entering with a .934 save percentage. Neither starting assignment had been officially confirmed when this preview was prepared.
I’m expecting a relatively controlled game rather than an offensive explosion.
Rantanen and Robertson are my preferred Dallas forwards, while Pastrnak remains Boston’s strongest fantasy option.
On defence, Heiskanen offers an attractive combination of offensive involvement and dependable minutes.
I also expect special teams to matter. Boston has the stronger power play, but Dallas’s penalty kill has been among the NHL’s best.
What matters more than the final score?
For fantasy managers, I would pay particular attention to Hagens’ minutes alongside Lindholm, Johnston’s power-play usage and which players occupy the offensive roles affected by Duchene’s absence.
Those developments could influence fantasy decisions for several games beyond Tuesday night.

Final Fantasy Hockey Takeaway
My projected result favours Dallas 3-2 in overtime, but I’m not fading Pastrnak simply because the Stars have been outstanding defensively.
For fantasy hockey managers, the smartest approach is to balance established offensive talent with the players receiving increased ice time, favourable line combinations, and power-play responsibilities.
