The NHL is delivering early-season drama, and Saturday’s biggest NHL news could have major implications for several teams already facing difficult decisions.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have received troubling injury news regarding John Tavares, adding another complication to a roster already dealing with Chris Tanev’s absence. Meanwhile, Nathan MacKinnon delivered a four-point performance as the Colorado Avalanche erased a two-goal deficit against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

In Boston, David Pastrnak helped power another Bruins comeback, while Brady Tkachuk enters Saturday with an opportunity to accomplish something no player has done in NHL history: score hat tricks in three consecutive games.

The NHL rumors surrounding the New York Rangers are also worth monitoring following Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending injury, while Detroit’s Dylan Larkin situation remains unresolved despite the Red Wings’ efforts to stabilize their roster.

With 14 NHL games scheduled Saturday, October 17, and two completed games Friday night, here is your latest NHL news, NHL rumors, injury information, trade analysis and complete NHL scores roundup.

Latest NHL News: John Tavares Injury Creates Major Concerns for Toronto

The Maple Leafs confirmed Saturday that John Tavares is week-to-week with a lower-body injury after a collision with Buffalo’s Josh Norris during Thursday’s 5-4 overtime loss.

The timing could hardly be worse.

Tavares has seven points in seven games, providing reliable offensive production while helping Toronto navigate a challenging opening stretch. Chris Tanev is also sidelined week-to-week, leaving the Leafs without two experienced players in important positions.

My analysis: Toronto’s immediate concern isn’t simply replacing Tavares’ points. It’s replacing his ability to win difficult matchups, support the power play and provide stability in the middle of the lineup.

Nick Paul is expected to assume additional responsibility, while Bo Groulx enters the lineup against the Islanders. Toronto’s coaching staff will also need to reconsider how it distributes offensive-zone opportunities.

There is a legitimate NHL trade discussion here, but a significant distinction matters: Toronto having a roster need does not mean management has already opened trade negotiations.

For now, the smartest approach may be evaluating internal replacements before surrendering valuable draft picks or prospects. However, a lengthy absence could change the calculation.

Gavin McKenna Gets Another Opportunity After Controversial Benching

The Tavares injury also creates an unexpected opportunity for Gavin McKenna.

Toronto’s first-overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft played just 6:36 against Buffalo and did not receive a shift during the final 32:54.

McKenna addressed the situation Saturday, explaining that he had a constructive conversation with coach Jim Hiller. Hiller indicated the decision wasn’t a punishment for the rookie’s performance.

More importantly, McKenna has now joined Toronto’s top power-play unit alongside Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Kirill Marchenko and Darren Raddysh.

This is a fascinating development. The Maple Leafs need veteran reliability, but they also need McKenna’s creativity.

I believe Toronto should resist allowing one difficult game to change its long-term development strategy. McKenna is capable of creating offensive opportunities that few teenagers can manufacture. The question is whether the coaching staff can maximize that talent without sacrificing defensive structure.

NHL Rumors: Jason Robertson Contract Talks, Rangers Goaltending and Detroit Trade Speculation

Dallas Stars Could Reopen Jason Robertson Contract Negotiations

One of Saturday’s most significant NHL contract developments involves Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson.

General manager Jim Nill revealed that he intends to begin discussions with Robertson’s representatives around December 1, with the forward eligible to sign a new long-term agreement beginning January 1, 2027.

Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract in July after recording 45 goals and 96 points last season. His future has remained an important storyline following earlier trade discussions involving Seattle.

My analysis: Dallas is handling this strategically. Waiting until December allows management to evaluate Robertson’s performance and the team’s competitive outlook without immediately turning negotiations into a distraction.

But the financial stakes are considerable. A player capable of scoring 40-plus goals has enormous leverage, particularly in a league with a rapidly rising salary ceiling.

A December conversation is not a promise of an extension. If negotiations stall, rival NHL teams could revisit Robertson’s availability. For now, Dallas has clearly identified a timetable for discussing a longer-term commitment.

New York Rangers Must Decide Whether Dylan Garand Is the Answer

The Rangers’ situation is more urgent.

Igor Shesterkin sustained a season-ending lower-body injury on October 9, leaving 24-year-old Dylan Garand with a substantially larger responsibility.

Garand performed exceptionally during his initial appearances, but Thursday’s 7-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils highlighted how quickly an NHL team’s outlook can change.

With veteran Joonas Korpisalo also recovering from injury, the Rangers face a difficult choice: trust Garand with the workload or investigate the trade market for experienced goaltending.

My preference would be patience before pursuing an expensive blockbuster.

A temporary starting assignment is valuable because it helps management determine whether Garand is more than a short-term solution. An early-season overpayment for a veteran goaltender could restrict New York’s ability to address other weaknesses later.

Trade watch: Connor Hellebuyck, Mackenzie Blackwood and other established goaltenders have appeared in recent trade speculation, but I have not verified an active October 17 agreement or a confirmed Rangers offer involving those players. Those possibilities should remain labelled as speculation.

Detroit Red Wings Push Back Against Simon Edvinsson Trade Talk

Detroit’s contract uncertainty continues, but an important update has challenged the narrative surrounding Simon Edvinsson.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff publicly stated he has no interest in trading the restricted free agent defenseman and wants to complete a contract.

Meanwhile, Dylan Larkin’s trade request remains unresolved. Horcoff described his situation as unchanged, avoiding speculation about potential destinations.

For me, Edvinsson and Larkin are fundamentally different situations.

Edvinsson represents a young, physically imposing defenseman who can potentially anchor Detroit’s blue line for years. Larkin’s situation involves the relationship between an established franchise player and an organization attempting to redefine its direction.

Trading Edvinsson simply because negotiations have become difficult would be an unnecessary risk. Detroit should prioritize completing his contract while determining whether its long-term plans still align with Larkin’s expectations.

This is also an important correction to earlier trade speculation: reports of possible Edvinsson destinations do not override Detroit management’s explicit statement that it is not looking to trade him.

NHL Scores: Nathan MacKinnon Takes Over Against Sidney Crosby

Friday night featured two NHL games, and both ended with the winning team overcoming an early 2-0 deficit.

Colorado defeated Pittsburgh 5-2 behind another exceptional Nathan MacKinnon performance. The Avalanche superstar collected one goal and three assists, giving him 16 points through eight games.

Artturi Lehkonen scored twice, Gabriel Landeskog added the eventual winner and T.J. Hughes recorded his first NHL goal.

Pittsburgh received goals from Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust but surrendered five unanswered goals.

My observation: Colorado’s offensive depth is particularly dangerous when opponents concentrate on containing MacKinnon. The Avalanche don’t need every opportunity to come directly from their top line, but MacKinnon’s playmaking makes their entire attack more difficult to defend.

Boston Bruins Extend Winning Streak to Four

Boston defeated Anaheim 4-2 after trailing by two goals.

David Pastrnak scored his 423rd career goal, moving into fourth place on Boston’s all-time scoring list. Elias Lindholm supplied the winner, Frederic Brunet scored his first NHL goal and Michael DiPietro made 25 saves for his first NHL victory.

The difference was special teams. Boston converted three of four power plays, while Anaheim went scoreless on five opportunities.

The Bruins are demonstrating something valuable early in the season: an ability to win games without controlling every stretch of play.

NHL News: Brady Tkachuk Chases an Unprecedented Scoring Record

Florida Panthers forward Brady Tkachuk has scored consecutive natural hat tricks and enters Saturday’s matchup with Seattle pursuing an extraordinary milestone.

No NHL player has ever scored three hat tricks in three consecutive games.

Tkachuk scored three goals against Columbus on Tuesday and added another three against Vancouver on Thursday. His production has transformed Florida’s offensive momentum.

What makes this interesting is the balance between individual brilliance and collective offense. Seattle’s defensive structure will receive a significant test, especially when Florida can deploy Brady and Matthew Tkachuk together.

Whether the record happens or not, six goals in two games is remarkable production.

Carolina Hurricanes Face Another Injury Challenge

Carolina will be without Taylor Hall on a week-to-week basis because of an upper-body injury. Captain Jordan Staal is also sidelined with a calf injury.

However, Seth Jarvis is nearing his season debut after shoulder surgery. Coach Rod Brind’Amour indicated Jarvis could return during the team’s upcoming road trip, pending medical clearance.

For the defending Stanley Cup champions, Jarvis’ eventual return could offset some of the offensive production lost through injuries.

NHL Salary Cap News: Dallas Makes a Smart Veteran Investment

The Dallas Stars signed David Perron to a one-year, $850,000 contract Friday.

Perron brings 1,239 NHL regular-season games of experience and Stanley Cup-winning pedigree. With Matt Duchene expected to miss approximately three months, Dallas gains veteran forward depth without committing substantial long-term salary.

Consider the financial difference: Perron’s $850,000 contract represents approximately 0.82% of the NHL’s $104 million salary ceiling for 2026-27. Robertson’s current $12 million contract represents approximately 11.54%.

Those percentages measure individual cap charges against the league ceiling, not Dallas’ remaining cap space.

The lesson for NHL general managers is straightforward: inexpensive veteran depth can provide flexibility, but retaining elite offensive stars requires careful long-term planning.

Other NHL Injury Updates Worth Watching

Saturday’s NHL status report also confirmed that Jacob Markstrom is expected to return in goal for Florida, Jake Sanderson could return for Ottawa’s next game, and Josh Morrissey remains week-to-week for Winnipeg.

Buffalo captain Rasmus Dahlin is still unavailable with an upper-body injury, while Montreal’s Oliver Kapanen is set to make his season debut.
