The Vancouver Canucks are poised for a summer of change, and the latest Mathew Barzal rumors could signal a massive shift in direction. Following a disappointing 2024–25 campaign after winning the Pacific Division the season prior, the Canucks are in retool mode. With J.T. Miller no longer on the roster, Brock Boeser expected to test free agency, and head coach Rick Tocchet stepping away, the organization needs a new face of the franchise — and Barzal may be that guy.
According to several NHL insiders, Vancouver has had internal discussions about acquiring Mathew Barzal from the New York Islanders. The Isles, under a new direction post-Lou Lamoriello, are on the brink of a full rebuild. Barzal, still just 27, holds significant trade value and could be the cornerstone return piece needed to jumpstart a youth movement on Long Island.
Could a Barzal Trade Be the Canucks’ Boldest Move Yet?
One rumored mock trade making waves online includes the Canucks sending Filip Chytil, top offensive prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki, forward Drew O’Connor, and a 2025 first-round pick to the Islanders in exchange for Barzal.
While that might seem like a hefty price, Barzal is a proven top-line center capable of electrifying an offense. He would slide perfectly into the Canucks’ top-six, bringing elite skating and playmaking to a team lacking creativity through the middle. From Vancouver’s standpoint, this move fast-tracks a retool and keeps them competitive in a Pacific Division that is getting tougher every year.
From the Islanders’ perspective, this would be a significant step toward acquiring younger assets. Jonathan Lekkerimäki has top-six potential on offense, while Chytil is still entering his prime and O’Connor adds depth. Combined with a first-round pick, this package could give New York flexibility as they look toward the future.
Still, questions remain: Is Barzal worth that return? Is Vancouver willing to move on from a valuable first-rounder and a high-ceiling prospect?

That’s not a hefty price for Barzal, it is an underpayment. Chytil is one hit away from never playing again. As it is, he can’t stay healthy, the most games he has ever played in a season was with the Rangers, 74 games. He needs to retire, if he wants to have all his facilties later in life. At the end of the season, he was on the injured list, with yet another concussion.
You guys need to figure thesem things out, before saying some of the “facts” you do and purposing trades that are down right stupid.
Don’t insult our intelligence.
You are just throwing ‘stuff’ up against the wall, hoping something sticks.
The Islanders are not entering a full rebuild that is an assumption and a bad one
That’s all these guys do, they don’t think things through.
I know, how about the Rangers trade Laffy, for McDavid, in a one for one deal.
See how utterly stupid that sounds, yet you see things like this from writers, who haven’t get a clue.
