Marcus Pettersson has signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks.

Well, a Pettersson made headlines in Vancouver today, and it wasn’t Elias Pettersson. Five days after acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Vancouver Canucks wasted no time in securing his future with a lucrative contract extension.

General Manager Patrik Allvin announced that the team has agreed to a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the 27-year-old defenseman. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $5.5 million and comes with full no-move and no-trade clauses for the first three years. In the final three years, the contract transitions to a 15-team no-trade list, giving the Canucks flexibility should they need to move him down the road.

Canucks Show Strong Commitment to Marcus Pettersson

Pettersson’s journey to Vancouver was part of a blockbuster trade with the Penguins that also saw forward Drew O’Connor land in Vancouver. In exchange, the Canucks sent defenseman Vincent Desharnais, forward Danton Heinen, and a conditional first-round pick to Pittsburgh.

At 6-foot-3 and 177 pounds, Pettersson brings a steady defensive presence and high-end mobility to the Canucks’ blue line. He has been a key shutdown defender in Pittsburgh, logging heavy minutes and excelling in defensive zone coverage. His ability to transition the puck efficiently and play a reliable two-way game makes him an ideal fit in Vancouver’s top-four defense group.

“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise, and character that we want in a top-four defenseman,” said Patrik Allvin in a statement. “His ability to shut down top opposition and contribute offensively when needed makes him a crucial part of our defensive core moving forward.”

A Smart Investment for Vancouver?

There’s no doubt that locking up Pettersson long-term solidifies Vancouver’s defense, but at $5.5 million AAV, is this a smart investment? The Canucks are banking on his defensive reliability and ability to log big minutes, but long-term deals for defensemen always come with risk. However, considering Pettersson’s steady play and the fact that elite shutdown defensemen are highly sought after, this move could prove to be a win for Vancouver in the long run.

With Quinn Hughes leading the charge offensively from the blue line, Pettersson provides a much-needed defensive balance, allowing Hughes to push the pace offensively while having a reliable partner to cover defensive responsibilities. If Pettersson can maintain his form, this contract could be a bargain in a few years as salaries continue to rise in the NHL.
