After an offseason of rumors where there were whispers of Raymond possibly receiving an offer sheet from a team, the Red Wings have locked down their budding star player.
The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Lucas Raymond to an eight-year, $64.6 million contract extension, the team announced on Monday. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $8.075 million, will keep Raymond under contract through the 2030-31 season.
Raymond, 22, was the fourth overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and has quickly become one of the Red Wings’ most important players. He had 31 goals and 72 points in 82 games last season.
“Lucas is a special player and a core piece of our future,” Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said in a statement. “He has a bright future ahead of him, and we are thrilled to have him signed to a long-term contract.”
The signing of Raymond is a major boost for the Red Wings, who are are on the cusp of a playoff team. The team has struggled in recent years, but they are hoping that Raymond and other young players can help them return to contention this season.
