The Detroit Red Wings’ contract negotiations with young forward Lucas Raymond are hitting a snag, potentially opening the door for trade speculation. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on his 32 Thoughts podcast that Raymond’s camp is aiming high, using Ottawa Senators star Tim Stützle’s recent 8-year, $8.35 million AAV contract as a comparable.
Friedman, however, was quick to point out that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is unlikely to entertain such a lofty comparison. “There’s no way Yzerman accepts that comparable,” Friedman stated, highlighting the potential impasse in negotiations.
Is Tim Stützle the Right Comparable for Lucas Raymond?
Raymond, the fourth overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career. He tallied 23 goals and 57 points in his rookie season and followed that up with a stellar 31 goals and 72 points last year.
Looking ahead, projections for Raymond’s 2024-25 season point totals vary, with some models predicting a slight increase to around 75-80 points. While his potential is undeniable, it’s clear that Yzerman is hesitant to commit top-dollar to a player who has yet to consistently produce at an elite level.
The Stützle contract, while impressive, is also a reflection of the Senators’ unique situation. Ottawa, still in the midst of a rebuild, is willing to invest heavily in its young core. The Red Wings, on the other hand, are in a different phase, aiming to build a contending team around captain Dylan Larkin.
If the two sides can’t find common ground, trade rumors are sure to swirl. Raymond’s youth, skill, and potential would make him an attractive asset for any team looking to add a dynamic offensive weapon. However, Yzerman is known for his shrewd negotiating tactics and is unlikely to part with Raymond unless he receives a substantial return.
The situation remains fluid, and it’s possible that a compromise can still be reached. But for now, the Lucas Raymond contract saga is one to watch closely as the NHL season approaches.
