The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again gearing up for a deep playoff run, and GM Brad Treliving is reportedly looking to bolster his center depth. According to Leafs insider James Mirtle of The Athletic, Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Laughton is at the top of their wish list.
Laughton, known for his versatility, feistiness, and grit, would be a valuable addition to the Leafs’ bottom six. He’s exactly the type of player who can thrive in the playoffs – responsible defensively, strong on the forecheck, and capable of chipping in offensively. Plus, with a cap-friendly $3 million AAV for next season, he fits nicely into the Leafs’ tight salary cap situation.
However, acquiring Laughton won’t be easy. The Flyers are likely to demand a significant return for the 30-year-old center, and the Leafs’ prospect pool isn’t exactly overflowing. It’s possible that a package involving a young roster player like Easton Cowan, along with a draft pick, could be enough to entice Flyers GM Daniel Briere.
Leafs Trade Rumors: Alternative Targets
If the Leafs can’t pry Laughton away from Philadelphia, there are other options on the market. Veteran centers like Ryan O’Reilly (Nashville Predators), Ryan Strome (Anaheim Ducks), and Nick Bjugstad (Utah Hockey Club) have also been mentioned as potential trade targets. Each player brings a different skillset to the table, but they all share one thing in common: playoff experience.
My take? Laughton is the ideal fit for the Leafs. He’s younger than O’Reilly and Strome, and he brings a physical edge that Bjugstad lacks. But with the NHL trade deadline fast approaching, Treliving may be forced to pivot if the asking price for Laughton is too high.
One thing is certain: the Leafs are in win-now mode, and Treliving is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to bring the Stanley Cup back to Toronto.
