Mackenzie Weegar Leafs
Read about a potential blockbuster trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers that never happened.

The talk with the Toronto Maple Leafs over the past several years is they need to improve their defence and NHL trade rumors are making the rounds about a trade that never went down in 2020.

The Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers almost completed a trade before the start of the 2020 NHL season.

Who was involved in the Blockbuster Leafs-Panthers trade?

Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek were on their 32 Thoughts podcast and stated the Toronto Maple Leafs had been looking for a right-shot defenceman all summer long in 2020.

GM Kyle Dubas contacted the Florida Panthers about Mackenzie Weegar and his availability.

Friedman said the Panthers wanted Travis Dermott and Andreas Johnsson in a deal but Dubas said no to the trade and no deal was ever completed.

That is a tough trade to look back on for Toronto Maple Leaf fans as the Leafs top four defenceman would have been…

Morgan Rielly – Jake Muzzin
T.J. Brodie – MacKenzie Weegar

Potential trades like this happen all the time, but Dubas definitely missed on this one.
