If the San Jose Sharks and Tomas Hertl can't agree to a contract extension he will likely be traded. The Ottawa Senators will have interest.

Tomas Hertl will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer and he could face a difficult decision. Does Hertl re-sign with a rebuilding Sharks club or does he move on?

If Hertl decided to move on, the Sharks will likely trade him at the 2022 NHL trade deadline and get some assets to help with the rebuild.

NHL Trade Rumors earlier this offseason had the Ottawa Senators interested in a Tomas Hertl trade.

Lyle Richardson of SI.com reports Hertl is entering the final season of his four-year, $22.5-million contract. A gifted, versatile two-way forward, he’s been hampered by injuries throughout his eight-season NHL career. He puts up good numbers when healthy, netting a career-high 74 points in 2018-19.

Richardson went on to say Hertl could command between $7 million and $8 million on the open market next summer. That could price himself out of San Jose.
