The New York Rangers are off to a disappointing start to the 2024-25 NHL season. This has led to a flurry of speculation surrounding the team, with names like Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider, and Kaapo Kakko swirling in the NHL trade rumor mill. But the hottest rumor of late? That embattled coach Joel Quenneville might be brought in to replace Peter Laviolette behind the bench.
Let me be clear: I don’t see that happening.
While Quenneville’s coaching pedigree is undeniable, his association with the Chicago Blackhawks sexual assault scandal makes him a highly controversial figure. The Rangers organization is acutely aware of the optics of such a hire, and the potential backlash from fans and the media would be immense.
Furthermore, Rangers insider Larry Brooks has categorically denied any link between Quenneville and the Rangers. He states that the team is committed to Laviolette, at least for the time being.
Why the New York Rangers Are Sticking with Peter Laviolette (For Now)
It’s still early in the season, and the Rangers’ struggles could be attributed to a number of factors, including injuries and a lack of chemistry. Giving Laviolette more time to right the ship seems like the most prudent course of action. A coaching change this early in the season could further destabilize the team.
However, if the NY Rangers continue to flounder, Laviolette’s position will undoubtedly become more precarious. The front office will be looking for answers, and if Laviolette can’t provide them, a change could be in the cards. But don’t expect Quenneville to be the solution.
