The Philadelphia Flyers may have one of the most intriguing opportunities on the NHL trade market sitting right in front of them. Dallas Stars superstar Jason Robertson remains one of the biggest names to watch, with The Fourth Period listing Philadelphia among several teams reportedly linked to the 27-year-old winger.
And here’s what makes this rumor particularly interesting: the Flyers can afford him right now.
Robertson signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Dallas Stars after producing 45 goals and 51 assists for 96 points in 82 games last season. That contract takes him directly to unrestricted free agency following the 2026-27 season.
Philadelphia currently has approximately $13.78 million in projected salary-cap space, meaning the Flyers could theoretically absorb Robertson’s entire $12 million cap hit without Dallas retaining salary.
That’s why I don’t dismiss this rumor.
The difficult part isn’t fitting Robertson under the cap. It’s convincing Dallas to trade him, and making sure Robertson isn’t merely a one-year rental.

Why a Jason Robertson Trade Makes Sense for the Philadelphia Flyers
Philadelphia’s roster has reached the point where general manager Daniel Briere can legitimately begin asking whether it’s time to make a major swing.
The Flyers made the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and finished third in the Metropolitan Division. More importantly, the young foundation is starting to become established.
Trevor Zegras is coming off a career-best 67-point season and signed a four-year contract worth $9.125 million annually. Travis Konecny led Philadelphia with 68 points, while Matvei Michkov recorded 51 points in his second NHL season.
Now imagine dropping a 45-goal scorer onto that roster.
Robertson didn’t simply lead Dallas with 96 points last season. He finished with 45 goals, 15 power-play goals, 41 power-play points and 294 shots.
That’s the type of high-end offensive weapon Philadelphia currently doesn’t have.
From my perspective, Robertson would immediately change how opposing teams defend the Flyers. You could build a top power-play unit around Robertson, Michkov, Zegras and Konecny rather than asking Philadelphia’s young forwards to carry virtually all of the offensive growth themselves.
Jason Robertson’s Contract Is the Biggest Risk
There is one enormous complication.
Robertson can become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Dallas avoided arbitration by signing him for one year at $12 million, essentially postponing the long-term decision.
That’s critical because Robertson has already demonstrated that he’ll say no to a destination if the long-term fit isn’t right.
An attempted sign-and-trade with Seattle fell apart earlier this summer after Robertson reportedly declined an eight-year contract worth approximately $15 million annually. Dallas GM Jim Nill subsequently confirmed that a potential trade with Seattle had existed.
That tells me Briere cannot treat this like a normal trade negotiation.
Before Philadelphia gives Dallas premium young talent and first-round picks, the Flyers need confidence Robertson is prepared to remain in Philadelphia.
Otherwise, I walk away.
My Philadelphia Flyers Salary-Cap Calculation
Here’s where the Flyers have an advantage.
PuckPedia currently projects Philadelphia with approximately $13.782 million in 2026-27 cap space. Robertson carries a $12 million cap hit.
My calculation:
$13.782M Flyers cap space – $12M Robertson cap hit = approximately $1.782M remaining.
And that’s without sending a single NHL salary to Dallas.
Consider a hypothetical scenario involving Owen Tippett. Tippett carries a $6.2 million cap hit through 2031-32.
If Philadelphia traded Tippett as part of a Robertson package, the net increase would be only $5.8 million.
$13.782M – ($12M – $6.2M) = approximately $7.982M remaining cap space.
That’s why I believe salary cap space isn’t what would kill a Flyers-Robertson trade.
The price would.
Philadelphia is also currently projected to have roughly $27.38 million available in 2027-28, although that figure comes with only 19 of 23 active roster positions filled. If Robertson eventually required something around a $16 million AAV, the number previously reported as his Dallas ask, Philadelphia could technically accommodate that contract, but the remaining roster would still need to be completed.
What Would the Dallas Stars Want for Jason Robertson?
Here’s where I’m making my own assessment rather than reporting that Dallas has requested specific Flyers players.
My hypothetical starting point would look something like:
Philadelphia Flyers receive:
Jason Robertson
Dallas Stars receive:
Owen Tippett
Oliver Bonk
2027 first-round pick
I would expect Dallas to push extremely hard for one of Philadelphia’s best young assets, particularly because Robertson isn’t some declining veteran being dumped for salary reasons.
Bonk remains one of Philadelphia’s notable young defensemen after being selected 22nd overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Tippett would give Dallas an established NHL scoring winger on a long-term $6.2 million contract.
Would I offer that package for one guaranteed season of Robertson?
No.
Would I seriously discuss it if Robertson’s camp indicated he was prepared to sign long-term in Philadelphia?
Absolutely.

This is my trade-value assessment, not a reported Dallas asking price. Robertson’s elite production pushes the score up, while one year of contract control significantly lowers his acquisition value compared with an identical player signed for five or six seasons.
Would I Make the Jason Robertson Trade?
Yes, but only with an understanding about an extension.
Robertson is exactly the type of player I believe Philadelphia eventually needs to acquire if this roster is going to graduate from promising playoff team to legitimate Stanley Cup threat.
The Flyers have already invested heavily in Zegras and their young core. Adding Robertson would give them a proven elite scorer rather than waiting and hoping every prospect develops into one.
There is also an important counterpoint: Dallas continues to publicly signal that Robertson is part of its plans. Jim Nill said after Robertson’s new contract that Robertson and the Stars’ core had made it clear they wanted to be there.
So Philadelphia being linked to Robertson should not be confused with Robertson being destined for Philadelphia.
That’s precisely why this story is fascinating.
The Dallas Stars have a superstar entering his walk year. The Philadelphia Flyers have enough cap space, enough young assets and a roster that is beginning to win.
If Dallas ever decides it can’t get Robertson signed long-term, Daniel Briere should be one of the first GMs making the call.
