Jake Oettinger is due for a new contract, and it could be massive. We analyze what his next deal might look like, comparing it to Jeremy Swayman's recent extension.

It’s no secret that Jake Oettinger is one of the NHL’s brightest young stars (pun intended). The 25-year-old netminder has backstopped the Dallas Stars to consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances and established himself as a bona fide number one goalie. But with his current contract expiring at the end of this season, the question on everyone’s mind is: what will his next deal look like?

Oettinger’s Next Deal Could Mirror Swayman’s $66 Million Contract

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently suggested that Oettinger was likely keeping a close eye on Jeremy Swayman’s new eight-year, $66 million contract with the Boston Bruins. Swayman, also a restricted free agent this past summer, set a benchmark for young goalies with his massive extension.

While there haven’t been any significant contract talks between Oettinger and Stars GM Jim Nill yet, it’s widely believed that Oettinger will command a similar, if not larger, payday than Swayman. Especially if he can lead the Stars to the Stanley Cup this year.

Oettinger’s performance has been nothing short of stellar. He consistently ranks among the league’s best in save percentage and goals-against average, and his playoff heroics have become legendary. Remember that incredible 64-save performance in Game 7 against Calgary in 2022? That’s the kind of performance that gets you paid.

It’s also worth noting that the goalie market is trending upwards. With teams increasingly recognizing the importance of elite goaltending, we’ve seen a surge in big-money contracts for young netminders. Oettinger is perfectly positioned to capitalize on this trend.

While it’s still early in the season, expect Oettinger’s contract situation to become a major storyline as we approach the trade deadline and the offseason. Will Nill try to lock him up early, or will Oettinger bet on himself and wait until the end of the year? One thing’s for sure: this is a negotiation that will have a significant impact on the Stars’ future.
