It appears Ilya Mikheyev was unhappy last year with his role and ice-time with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is looking like Mikheyev wants more playing time, which leads to more points, which leads to a bigger contract for him which he is due next year.

Elliotte Friedman is reporting Ilya Mikheyev asked for a trade following the 2020-21 season. The issue appears to be role and ice-time, heading into the final year of his contract. His 14:13 per game last season was eighth among Toronto forwards. He had seven goals and 17 points in 2020-21, going pointless in the playoffs.

Friedman went on to say, the Maple Leafs made it clear they do not want to accommodate this request. The organization told Mikheyev it considers him a key part of their team and are counting on him to have a big year.

Right now, it is looking like Mikheyev will be part of the team or him would have been traded this offseason. He is a talented forward and with the little cap space the Leafs do have, they cannot afford to trade him.
