Elias Pettersson rumors heat up as the Buffalo Sabres continue their pursuit of the Canucks star, despite J.T. Miller's trade to the Rangers.

The Buffalo Sabres remain aggressive in their pursuit of Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, even after the recent trade that sent J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers. According to Sabres insider Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, the Sabres are unlikely to back off from their attempts to acquire Pettersson, especially with the New Jersey Devils now showing interest in Canucks winger Brock Boeser.

Buffalo has been searching for a dynamic, top-line center to complement their young core, and Pettersson fits the bill perfectly. With 89, and 102 points the past few seasons, the Swedish star is a proven offensive force who could elevate the Sabres to legitimate playoff contention. The front office appears determined to land him either before the NHL trade deadline or, if necessary, at the 2025 NHL Draft.

What Would It Take for the Sabres to Land Pettersson?

Trade rumors have consistently linked Sabres center Dylan Cozens and defenseman Bowen Byram as the primary pieces in a potential package for Pettersson. Cozens, a high-energy, two-way forward with top-six upside, would give Vancouver an immediate NHL-ready replacement at center. Additionally, his connection to Western Canada makes this an intriguing move—Harrington notes that Cozens might welcome a trade to Vancouver, as it would bring him closer to his family in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Byram, a smooth-skating defenseman with elite potential, would also be required in the deal. The Canucks have been looking to bolster their blue line, and acquiring a player of Byram’s caliber would be a major boost. However, whether Buffalo is willing to part with both Cozens and Byram remains uncertain.

If a deal isn’t reached by the NHL trade deadline, Buffalo is expected to revisit negotiations at the 2025 NHL Draft. By that point, the Sabres may have additional assets to offer, especially if they make changes to their roster during the offseason.

What’s Next for the Buffalo Sabres?

As the trade deadline approaches, expect more developments in the Pettersson saga. The Sabres are clearly want to be a playoff contender next season, and landing Pettersson would be a franchise-altering move. While Vancouver remains hesitant to move their top scorer, continued pressure from Buffalo and the shifting NHL trade landscape could force their hand.
