The Edmonton Oilers are completely shifting their trade deadline strategy, and it’s going to shake up the Western Conference arms race. For the past month, the rumor mill has relentlessly linked the Oilers to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McCann. But according to Oilers insider David Staples of the Edmonton Journal, the front office has officially called off the dogs on acquiring a top-nine forward.
Instead, Edmonton is pivoting hard to the blue line. Why the sudden change of heart? The answer lies in the team’s internal growth. Leading up to the Olympic break, forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Josh Samanski stepped up in a massive way. They haven’t just filled gaps; they’ve proven to management that they are fully capable of logging heavy, high-stakes top-nine minutes in the playoffs. With the forward depth suddenly solidified from within, Edmonton can focus their assets on their most glaring need: a rugged, dependable defenseman to clear the crease during a deep Stanley Cup run.
The Perfect Fit: Edmonton Oilers and Connor Murphy
As an NHL analyst, my read on this situation is clear: Edmonton is looking for a specific type of defensive profile. While Staples hasn’t dropped a specific name just yet, we can easily read between the lines of the current market.
Fans might be dreaming of high-profile blockbusters, but the Oilers are highly unlikely to pursue expensive, long-term blueliners like the New Jersey Devils’ Dougie Hamilton or the St. Louis Blues’ Justin Faulk. Taking on massive term at this stage of the Connor McDavid era restricts too much flexibility.
The absolutely perfect fit is Connor Murphy.
The 32-year-old Chicago Blackhawks veteran brings exactly what Edmonton lacks. He is a right-shot, shot-blocking machine who thrives on the penalty kill and plays a heavy, playoff-tailored game. More importantly, Murphy carries a highly manageable $4.4 million AAV and will be an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) this summer, making him the ultimate pure rental. He won’t clog the salary cap pipeline for the next three years, but he will provide immediate stability on the right side of Edmonton’s defensive corps.
Cap Gymnastics: Moving Mangiapane to Make Room
Of course, in today’s flat-cap NHL, acquiring a $4.4 million player isn’t as simple as swapping draft picks. The Oilers are tight against the ceiling. If they want to pull the trigger on a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks for Connor Murphy, general manager Stan Bowman will have to get creative.
The most logical avenue is finding a way to unload Andrew Mangiapane’s contract. Moving Mangiapane out would instantly clear the required cap space to absorb Murphy’s hit. Whether that means attaching a sweetener to ship Mangiapane to a third team or sending him back to Chicago in the deal, this is the domino that must fall. If the Oilers can execute that cap gymnastics routine, Murphy could be wearing orange and blue by the trade deadline.
