Could Dylan Larkin be the Montreal Canadiens' next blockbuster acquisition? The Detroit Red Wings captain remains at the centre of NHL trade rumors as Montreal explores ways to strengthen its roster, but Larkin's trade preferences and $8.7 million contract remain major obstacles.

The Montreal Canadiens may have something several other NHL teams don’t: enough attractive trade assets to satisfy the Detroit Red Wings in a potential Dylan Larkin blockbuster. But there’s one major problem standing between Montreal and its dream second-line centre.

Dylan Larkin still hasn’t agreed to play for a Canadian team.

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli’s October 6 report, an NHL front-office executive believes the Canadiens are uniquely positioned to give Detroit what it wants for Larkin while offering a legitimate opportunity to contend. However, Montreal remains absent from the veteran centre’s reported list of acceptable trade destinations.

That’s what makes this situation so fascinating.

The Canadiens are looking to take another step toward Stanley Cup contention, while the Red Wings continue navigating Larkin’s trade request. Montreal’s 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators on Thursday only adds another talking point to the conversation about the team’s roster construction.

And with Larkin coming off a 34-goal season, the potential fit is impossible to ignore.

But is this a genuine breakthrough for Montreal, or another trade possibility that looks much better on paper than it does in reality?

Why the Montreal Canadiens Remain Connected to Dylan Larkin

The latest development comes from Frank Seravalli, which identified Montreal as an attractive potential landing spot.

One NHL executive told Seravalli that the Canadiens could have the ingredients needed to satisfy Detroit’s trade demands.

That doesn’t mean a trade is close.

In fact, the report makes it clear that Larkin’s preferences remain the biggest issue. He has expanded his list of acceptable destinations, but the latest reporting still excludes Canadian franchises.

On September 25, Elliotte Friedman reported through Sportsnet that Larkin was open to approximately eight teams, a significant increase from his original three reported choices.

That development showed some flexibility, but Montreal has not been confirmed as one of those destinations.

For Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, the challenge is therefore different from a normal blockbuster negotiation. Before discussing what Detroit wants, Montreal needs to know whether Larkin is genuinely willing to consider the city.

Why Dylan Larkin Could Be Montreal’s Missing Second-Line Centre

From a hockey perspective, I believe Larkin makes considerable sense for the Canadiens.

Montreal already has an established first-line centre in Nick Suzuki. The addition of Larkin would give head coach Martin St. Louis another high-end option capable of driving possession, creating offence and handling difficult matchups.

Larkin brings speed through the neutral zone, a dangerous release and the ability to attack defenders rather than simply distribute the puck.

I particularly like the possibility of pairing him with Ivan Demidov once the young winger is healthy.

Demidov’s creativity could benefit from a centre who attacks the middle of the ice with pace. Larkin wouldn’t need to dominate every possession to create scoring opportunities.

That combination could also reduce the pressure on Suzuki to handle almost every important offensive assignment.

Still, the Canadiens shouldn’t mistake an attractive fit for an urgent requirement. Their young core is developing, and sacrificing several long-term pieces could undermine the foundation Hughes has carefully built.

Dylan Larkin’s Recent Production Shows What Montreal Would Be Buying

The Detroit Red Wings centre has remained a reliable offensive producer despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Over his last three completed NHL seasons, Larkin has recorded 97 goals and 206 points in 224 games.

His 34 goals in 2025-26 were particularly important because they demonstrated that he remains a legitimate finishing threat at age 30.

Another encouraging sign came October 6, when Larkin returned from an upper-body injury and recorded a goal and an assist in Detroit’s 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

That performance matters.

A player requesting a trade can become a distraction, but Larkin showed he can still contribute meaningful offence while his future remains unsettled.

NHLTradeRumor.com analysis: His three-year production suggests Montreal would be purchasing established top-six performance rather than gambling solely on a past reputation.

Can the Montreal Canadiens Afford Dylan Larkin’s $8.7 Million Contract?

The salary-cap situation is considerably more complicated than it was earlier in the offseason.

Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit through the 2030-31 season.

Montreal currently has approximately $989,469 in projected cap space against the NHL’s $104 million ceiling.

That leaves a gap of approximately $7.71 million before the Canadiens could absorb Larkin’s complete annual cap hit.

This is where the conversation becomes interesting.

Montreal would almost certainly need to send salary elsewhere, involve another club or explore some combination of roster adjustments. Moving assets alone wouldn’t solve the financial problem.

For example, the combined $7.8 million cap hits of Kirby Dach and Zack Bolduc would theoretically provide enough room alongside Montreal’s existing projected space, leaving just $89,469 in the simplified calculation.

That is an illustration of the cap mathematics, not a reported trade proposal.

Actual roster requirements, timing, bonuses and the Red Wings’ willingness to accept particular players would still matter.

What Would the Detroit Red Wings Want for Dylan Larkin?

Detroit has little reason to give Larkin away cheaply.

He remains a proven NHL centre with significant term remaining on his contract, and even a requested trade doesn't automatically erase that value.

Seravalli's reporting indicates Montreal previously assembled a substantial offer for Kirill Marchenko, believed to include three NHL players, a first-round pick and a conditional selection that could become another first-rounder.

That proposal demonstrates Montreal's willingness to consider aggressive moves, but it should not be mistaken for an actual Larkin offer.

My interpretation is that Detroit would prioritize a young centre with meaningful upside, another valuable asset and premium draft compensation rather than accepting expensive contracts merely to make Montreal's cap situation work.

Prospects such as Michael Hage could naturally become subjects of outside trade speculation, but there is no verified report establishing a specific Hage-for-Larkin offer.

The Canadiens must be careful not to pay two separate premiums: one for Larkin's present-day performance and another for the years he has remaining under contract.

There is also a hidden complication.

Larkin's full trade protection reduces Detroit's ability to negotiate freely with every interested franchise. That could affect the final return, even if the Red Wings maintain a high asking price.

Could Montreal's Loss to Nashville Increase the Pressure?

The Canadiens held a 2-0 lead against Nashville on October 8 before surrendering five unanswered goals in a 5-2 defeat.

Nick Suzuki and Alex Newhook scored Montreal's goals, while Ryan O'Reilly delivered the decisive third-period power-play goal.

One disappointing game is not enough to justify a franchise-changing trade.

However, these early-season results can expose weaknesses that management has already identified.

For Montreal, improving centre depth could create better balance throughout the lineup, especially against opponents with multiple dangerous scoring lines.

I would be more concerned with how consistently the Canadiens control play through the middle of the ice than with any single final score.

Larkin would help in that area, but he would not automatically solve defensive breakdowns or inconsistent goaltending.

The Biggest Obstacle Isn't Detroit — It's Dylan Larkin

The most important question is whether Larkin would change his position on playing in Canada.

His reported willingness to broaden his list of acceptable destinations suggests the situation isn't completely frozen.

But there is a substantial difference between adding another American contender and accepting the pressure of playing for the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal offers a talented young roster, passionate fans and the potential to compete for championships. Whether those factors appeal to Larkin enough to change his trade preferences is unknown.

My prediction: Montreal remains an intriguing outside possibility, not the favourite to acquire Larkin.

I wouldn't rule out Hughes exploring the opportunity further, especially if other preferred destinations struggle to assemble acceptable packages.

But until Larkin authorizes Montreal as a destination, no amount of salary-cap creativity or trade-value modelling can turn this rumour into an imminent transaction.

What Happens Next in the Dylan Larkin Trade Rumors?

There are three developments worth monitoring: whether Larkin expands his preferred destinations again, whether Detroit adjusts its asking price and whether Montreal makes additional moves to create flexibility.

For now, there is no confirmed trade agreement or verified indication that Larkin has agreed to join the Canadiens.

The potential blockbuster remains compelling because Montreal appears to have the organizational assets to pursue it.

But the breakthrough Canadiens fans are waiting for is not necessarily a better offer from Kent Hughes.

It may simply be a change of heart from Dylan Larkin.
