The hockey world was rocked yesterday when NHL insider Darren Dreger confirmed on TSN that Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has formally requested a trade. After 11 seasons, a decade without playoff hockey, and a growing frustration with the direction of the rebuild, Larkin is ready to move on. He wants to play for a Stanley Cup contender, and right now, all signs are pointing toward the State of Hockey.
The Minnesota Wild have emerged as the absolute frontrunner, and frankly, it’s the most obvious fit in the league. General Manager Bill Guerin has been desperate for a true No. 1 center to drive play and unlock another level for Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy. Larkin, who brings elite speed, leadership, and a consistent 30-goal pedigree, is exactly what Minnesota needs to push them over the edge in a brutally competitive Central Division.
But to me, the most fascinating angle here isn’t just the positional fit, it’s the Quinn Hughes factor.
The Michigan Connection: Why Larkin Makes Sense in St. Paul
Let’s look at the broader picture. When the Wild acquired Quinn Hughes in that massive December 2025 blockbuster, they solidified their blue line. Hughes and Brock Faber are a dominant pairing. Now, factor in that Hughes and Larkin are former teammates from the University of Michigan. With Hughes entering a contract year and the Wild needing to convince him to sign a long-term extension, bringing in his college buddy and an elite center is the ultimate recruiting tool. It shows the organization is absolutely serious about winning right now.
Dreger correctly noted that any deal for Larkin will require a massive haul. Detroit GM Steve Yzerman isn’t going to give away his captain for pennies on the dollar. The asking price is steep: a first-round draft pick, a top-tier prospect, and a roster-ready top-six forward. The Wild have the prospect capital, think Danila Yurov or Charlie Stramel, and the cap flexibility to make the math work on Larkin’s $8.7 million AAV.
Larkin gave his heart and soul to Detroit. He was nurtured by that organization and carried the weight of the winged wheel through some very dark years. But the reality is, he needs a change of scenery to chase a championship. The Wild have the motivation, the assets, and the connections to make this happen.
