During a recent segment on TSN’s Insider Trading, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed that the Flames have contacted the Sabres about a potential trade for Cozens. However, Buffalo’s asking price remains high. LeBrun emphasized that any deal for Cozens would have to be a “hockey trade,” meaning the Sabres are not interested in purely acquiring draft picks or prospects. Instead, they would require an NHL-ready player in return.
Why the Sabres Might Hesitate to Trade Cozens
Buffalo remains hesitant to part ways with Cozens, as they have seen firsthand what can happen when talented young forwards leave the organization. Ryan O’Reilly, Jack Eichel, and Sam Reinhart all became stars—and eventually Stanley Cup champions—after their time in Buffalo. The Sabres don’t want to make the same mistake again by moving Cozens unless they receive a significant return.
From Calgary’s perspective, adding Cozens would provide a much-needed boost to their center depth, offering long-term stability behind Nazem Kadri. However, the challenge will be meeting Buffalo’s demands while also ensuring they don’t deplete their own roster in the process.

With the Flames in win-now mode and Buffalo still struggling to find consistency, the door remains open for a trade. Calgary has pieces they could move.
