Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom injured clutching his knee
New Jersey Devils' star goalie Jacob Markstrom is out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. This is a major blow to the Devils' playoff hopes.

The New Jersey Devils’ season has taken a major hit with the news that star goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a knee sprain. Markstrom suffered the injury during Wednesday’s win against the Boston Bruins when forward Justin Brazeau crashed into the net.

Fan Favorite Jacob Markstrom’s Absence a Major Setback

This is a devastating blow to the Devils, who are in a tight race for a playoff position in the Metropolitan Division. Markstrom has been a rock in net for the Devils all season, posting a stellar 21-9-5 record with a 2.20 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.

Markstrom’s absence will leave a huge void in the Devils’ net. Backup goaltender Jake Allen is a capable replacement, but he doesn’t have the same track record of success as Markstrom. The Devils will need Allen to step up in a big way if they want to stay in the playoff hunt.

Impact on The Four Nations Face-Off

The injury also throws a wrench into Markstrom’s plans to play for Sweden at the upcoming Four Nations Face-Off tournament. Markstrom was one of three goalies named to Sweden’s roster, but it is now unlikely that he will be able to participate.
