The Detroit Red Wings want to be a playoff contender next season. They were expected to contend for a playoff spot this season but are once again missing the 2023 NHL playoffs.
With the Red Wings trading away Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Hronek and Jakub Vrana the team needs to find some additional difference makers either through free agency or trade this offseason.
Who will the Detroit Red Wings sign or trade for this offseason?
Max Bultman of The Athletic reports the NHL free agent pool is rather light this year. Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko are the big fish but they are getting up there in age and will likely seek to sign with a Stanley Cup contender.
The 2nd tier of free agents are Michael Bunting, Alex Killorn and Jason Zucker. GM Steve Yzerman will likely not spend money on the mentioned 2nd tier free agents as their stats are rather inflated by playing with elite forwards.
Will the Detroit Red Wings trade for Mark Scheifele?
Bultman went on to say in his piece that the Detroit Red Wings should make a trade for an elite forward this summer like the Ottawa Senators did with Alex DeBrincat.
It is not known yet what elite forwards could be available this summer? It could be J.T. Miller? Perhaps Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele, as he needs a change of scenery and is still under contract for another year with a Jets salary cap hit of $6.12M.
