The Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors surrounding the Winnipeg Jets may finally be approaching their most important moment yet. Hellebuyck already made his trade request public in August. Now, with Jets training camp arriving, multiple reports indicate the three-time Vezina Trophy winner may not report, and that could dramatically change the leverage on both sides.
According to reporting cited by Daily Faceoff, Hellebuyck is not expected to report to Winnipeg’s upcoming training camp. Darren Dreger has also indicated he does not expect the veteran goaltender to be there. But there is an important wrinkle: NHL.com reported Wednesday morning that Hellebuyck is expected to report while openly questioning whether he actually will. Winnipeg also included him on its training-camp roster.
That means a formal holdout should not be treated as confirmed yet.
But if Hellebuyck stays away once the Jets begin their official camp work, this story changes considerably. Winnipeg would no longer simply be shopping an unhappy star during a quiet offseason. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff would suddenly be managing a very public standoff with one of the greatest players in franchise history.
Why Connor Hellebuyck’s Training Camp Decision Changes the Jets’ Trade Leverage
Hellebuyck publicly confirmed on August 27 that he had privately requested a trade “several months” earlier. His position was unmistakable: “moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.” The Winnipeg Jets acknowledged the request and said they would continue working through the situation.
The important development now isn’t that Hellebuyck wants a trade. We already knew that.
It’s whether he’s prepared to use his absence from camp as additional leverage.
From my perspective, that’s where the pressure begins shifting toward Winnipeg. Cheveldayoff can wait out trade conversations in June, July and August. It’s considerably harder to ignore the issue when the rest of the team is on the ice every morning and reporters are asking players and coaches where the starting goalie is.
There was another small development worth watching Wednesday: Hellebuyck was reportedly one of the players absent from Winnipeg’s final informal skate before camp. That alone does not confirm a holdout, but it certainly doesn’t cool the speculation.
The Biggest Problem for Winnipeg: Buyers Aren’t Desperate Yet
Here’s what makes the Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors particularly fascinating.
The trade request hasn’t created the bidding war Winnipeg would want.
Dreger’s latest reporting suggests interest has been minimal and that teams engaging the Jets have been looking for something closer to a bargain than paying a premium return. The Hockey News also reported that Buffalo, Utah and Carolina remain among the potential fits discussed around the league.
That’s bad timing for Winnipeg.
Hellebuyck is unquestionably capable of changing a contender’s ceiling, but acquiring him is not a simple rental transaction. He is 33 years old and carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31. His contract also contains a full no-movement clause for 2026-27, giving Hellebuyck significant control over where he can go.
And buyers have another negotiating point: Hellebuyck wasn’t at his Hart Trophy level last season.
After going 47-12-3 with a .925 save percentage and 2.00 goals-against average in 2024-25, he finished 2025-26 at 23-23-11 with a .895 save percentage and 2.86 GAA in 57 games. He did, however, remind everyone of his elite ceiling by starring for the United States during its Olympic gold-medal run.
That combination creates one of the strangest NHL trade valuations I’ve seen in years: Winnipeg is selling an elite résumé while opposing general managers can point directly to age, term, trade protection and last season’s numbers.

This isn’t meant to predict the exact package Winnipeg would receive. It’s a measurement of the strength of the asset from the seller’s perspective.
Hellebuyck’s ability remains enormously valuable. The problem is that Winnipeg doesn’t control every variable.
What Connor Hellebuyck’s Contract Means for Winnipeg’s Next Move

There is also an overlooked salary-cap component.
PuckPedia currently projects the Winnipeg Jets at $99,518,332 against the $104 million salary cap, leaving them with $4,481,668 in projected cap space. Hellebuyck accounts for $8.5 million of that payroll.
If Winnipeg traded Hellebuyck with no salary retained and took no NHL salary back, its theoretical projected room would rise to approximately:
$4,481,668 + $8,500,000 = $12,981,668
If the Jets then filled that roster position with a player at the new $850,000 NHL minimum, the estimated net projected space would be approximately:
$12,981,668 − $850,000 = $12,131,668
The $850,000 NHL minimum for 2026-27 is established under the new CBA.
That’s a significant amount of flexibility, but cap space alone doesn’t replace an elite starting goalie.
Winnipeg already has Stuart Skinner under contract at $3.75 million, which gives the organization more protection than it would otherwise have, but moving Hellebuyck would fundamentally alter the Jets’ competitive outlook.
Could a Hellebuyck Holdout Finally Force the Jets to Make a Trade?
I don’t think Winnipeg should panic simply because training camp has arrived.
Selling Hellebuyck cheaply would be worse asset management than dealing with several uncomfortable weeks of questions.
But the equation changes if Hellebuyck actually refuses to report and remains away as the September 29 regular season approaches. NHL.com has already described the situation as potentially becoming untenable if nothing is resolved before the season begins.
That’s the date I would watch rather than the first day of camp.
A missed practice generates headlines. Missing meaningful games changes leverage.
And that’s why the next several days could tell us more about the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck than the previous several months did.
If Hellebuyck reports, Winnipeg buys itself time and can continue demanding proper value.
If he doesn’t, every day that passes turns a trade request into a bigger organizational storyline.
The blockbuster still isn’t inevitable, but for the first time this fall, the clock may actually be working against the Jets.
