Colorado Avalanche rumors: Casey Mittelstadt reportedly on the trade block amid struggles. Could he be heading to the San Jose Sharks in a major deal?

The Colorado Avalanche had high hopes for Casey Mittelstadt when they acquired him, expecting the skilled forward to solidify their second-line center role. However, things haven’t gone as planned. Mittelstadt has found himself relegated to the fourth line as head coach Jared Bednar turned to Mikko Rantanen to fill the void on the second line.

Mittelstadt’s struggles have not gone unnoticed, and according to Avalanche insider Adrian Dater, there’s growing speculation that the forward could be moved before the NHL trade deadline. Reports suggest Bednar is unhappy with Mittelstadt’s recent play, further fueling trade rumors.

Could Casey Mittelstadt Be Traded to the San Jose Sharks?

With Colorado actively seeking an upgrade at center, the rumor mill has linked Mittelstadt to several potential destinations. One trade scenario gaining traction involves the San Jose Sharks.

The speculated deal would see the Avalanche acquire veteran Mikael Granlund and depth forward Nico Sturm in exchange for Mittelstadt and a 2025 second-round draft pick. Granlund could provide the offensive stability the Avalanche need, while Sturm brings familiarity, having played in Colorado during their 2022 Stanley Cup-winning campaign.

Despite the rumors, not all fans are on board with the idea. Many believe trading Mittelstadt now would be selling low, with one fan suggesting a trade back to Buffalo, where Mittelstadt had his most productive stint.

Additionally, Colorado has been linked to former Avalanche center Nazem Kadri. However, given the Calgary Flames’ competitive start to the season, prying Kadri away seems unlikely.
