NHL trade rumors have been swirling around the Montreal Canadiens, with many speculating that they’re looking to bolster their roster with a defenseman and a physical forward. However, as Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette recently pointed out, the Canadiens’ most glaring need is arguably in the net.
Sam Montembeault and Cayden Primeau have been splitting time between the pipes this season, but neither has consistently shown the ability to steal games. This inconsistency has left the Canadiens vulnerable and struggling to climb the standings.
Canadiens Trade Rumors: Goalie Market Thin
The big question is, who can the Canadiens realistically acquire to address this issue? The trade market for quality goaltenders is notoriously thin, and this season is no exception. One name that has surfaced is San Jose Sharks goalie MacKenzie Blackwood.
Blackwood, still young and with flashes of brilliance in his past, could be a potential target. However, he has also struggled with consistency and injuries. It’s a gamble, but perhaps one worth taking for a Canadiens team desperate for a spark.
My gut feeling is that Blackwood is not the answer. While he possesses the raw talent, his inconsistency and injury history are red flags. The Canadiens need a reliable presence in net, someone who can provide stability and confidence to the team. Unfortunately, that type of goalie is a rare commodity in today’s NHL, and prying one away from another team will likely require a significant package.
The Canadiens find themselves in a tough spot. There’s no easy solution to their goaltending woes. They’ll need to get creative and explore all avenues if they hope to find the upgrade they desperately need. Whether it’s through a trade, waivers or even looking within their own system, the Canadiens need to make a move sooner rather than later. The longer they wait, the deeper the hole they dig themselves into.
